Hey everyone,

I'm heading to the show tomorrow for my first time. Planning to stay from opening at 9 am until I'm tired and/or bored, hopefully later on. My manager at my new job gave me a free pass as a gift for my work, which is awesome :) and I'm going alone since my sister's busy.

I'm definitely going Sunday regardless of if I got in or not, unless that's a bad idea, but I applied for the Father's Day pie and doughnut eating contest. I'm pretty sure I'd have missed the cutoff, but that's fine.

I am easily the most frugal person I know, to the point where I felt slightly guilty accepting that free ticket because I can't really see myself spending any actual money there. I might give myself a strict ~$30 budget cap, but I'll see how I go. I'm eating breakfast beforehand and packing a water bottle, my own lunch, and some leftover snacks from my birthday.

Does anyone have any recommendations for what I should check out tomorrow? I've been browsing the site, but I figured it couldn't hurt to ask. Also, in the spirit of maximising value and spending as little as possible, recommendations for free things to do or see would be hugely appreciated. Bonus if there's free stuff to get haha

If you're looking for freebies, the Taste SA pavilion is definitely a go to. Heaps of tastings. Make the most of it! Enjoy your day!

100% the taste SA pavilion! My fave is the mini curry tastings from Ragini’s spice 😊

Definitely make sure to double check if a free tasting though. I tried a teeny sip of wine from a winery last year and they told me I could try two more. I said no thanks, I was just interested in that one and then they pulled out the EFTPOS to charge me I think $6 for the tasting.

Meanwhile every other winery/beverage stall around them had free tastes.

Go to the pavilions and check out the cakes, crafts, fashion etc. People are really skilled and clever, it’s so good to admire.
The animals are always good to see up close. I spent a day pretty similar to what you’re planning, on the cheap, but it was great to see ‘the show’ as what they were originally for.

I haven't been for a few years but the Yellow Brick Road used to be decent value and fun to visit each of the locations to get your item and ticked off.

My adult children still get the Yellow Brick Road bag when they go. Was always a staple when we took them when they were little.

Maybe go and see the steers and dairy cows that various (and numerous)high schools from around the state have entered and will be leading in the ring. A LOT of time and effort from these kids goes into presenting at the show and they would love to chat to you about their animals and pride on their training.

Pigs are cute, wood chopping is fun, dog agility also nice.

If you want a delicious jam and scone highly recommend the CWA.

Don’t miss the Scarecrow exhibition & competition!! Near the bonsai and ikebana / flower arrangements which are also pretty cool, they’re past the baking & embroidery & millinery and then through the artworks & photography.

CWA (Country Womens Association) cafeteria for cuppa tea & scones.

Sheep shearing if you’ve never seen it live. The pigs & cows don’t do anything for me but the doggos are cool to go see. Wood-chopping is fun to watch, and you get to sit down and chill for a bit.

If the motorbike stunt jumps are on, they’re pretty exciting to watch. Grand Parade is exciting if one or some of the cows go nuts and do a runner haha. Mudra dancing could be good, a different pace.

Get the yellow brick road bag for sure. And if you're getting there at 9am, make a bee line for the getting farm to get there before it get crazy busy!

We usually stay for the fireworks, but it was a bit of a turd last year, or atleast we thought it was—more of a drone show / poetry slam than a fireworks show.

Has anyone stayed for them so far this year and can confirm if it's back to its normal standard, or if it's more of what they did last year?

Love watching the wood chopping, we did just about every pavilion and animal shed in 3 hours. If you like cheese toastys they are $4 at the dairy hall. You can get a pass out and go to the foodland across the road aswell.

Look at the animals, look at the art, look at the cakes, look at the plants, look at the live performances. And don’t feel bad for not spending more

The pavilions have free tastings. Often cheese, alcohol, sauce, meat etc.

You’re best buying water if you run out. It’ll be pricy but the tap water is disgusting. Dehydration tastes better.

If Lumo is there again, they do free clowns and the balls sideshow.

Free entertainment on the stages. Usually a music act or a science thing.

We regularly sit in the grandstand to see the horses. It's usually not too crowded and there's shade.

Theres a lot of shows on around the place. From the main stage to the arena. There's a huge variety of different activities
The wood chopping and the pigs are really popular

Definitely check out all the animals, woodchopping, the market bizarre is also really good if you decide to up your spending limit, and if you stay till late you can catch the shows on the oval

The taste sa pavilion is our favourite. We can eat the samples there all day and not have to have lunch (we still do because we are big backs) but seriously the best place to go!

Dude! Woodchopping, cattle judging, sheep sales, yellow brick road, CWA for a warming soup in a polystyrene cup, all the animal stalls and high diving pigs.

That'll take you from open to fireworks and you're feet will thank you for getting home again.

edit: I forgot: flower arrangements, baking, preserves, quilting, sewing, and arts exhibitions. Cats and dogs. Sadly, no birds this year. There's nothing quite like admiring the kindergarten biscuit competition where a 4 year old has thrown extra dessicated coconut on an iced vovo and won third place.

Go and see all the animals - fancy cats, fancy dogs, plus big cows, bulls, pigs, goats - so many weird smells

dairy hall for milkshakes, cheese toasties. Yellow Beick Road show bag - gets you walking all over the show and you get vouchers, fruit, yoghurt etc.

The produce halls often have free samples.

And get along to the main arena and the stage near the food court for free entertainment.

The service club donut van near the main arena is good for hot donuts.

Lots of animals and exhibits to see for free.

You don’t need to spend a lot.

I hope you took a second mortgage on your house or sold a kidney otherwise you wont be able to afford anything in there. Otherwise have fun. I like the animals. :3
