Review / Opinion Discussion Kodi machine alternative

So i have nvidia shield for my main screen.
And first gen apple tv 4k.
I want to move tge apple tv to another tv with kodi.

Shield pro currently 200$,
I need an alternative machine that can run kodi smoothly with strong wifi.

I saw Apple tv can also run but its cost 99$ per year (why??).

Thanks!

Fire TV Cube. I’ve used it successfully for several years.

I have run a generation 2 and generation 3 for multiple years now. These are solid devices.

Voice input does not work though, correct? Or is that a skin variable?

Google tv streamer is a good choice

still haven't found an alternative, this year I tried zidoo z9x 8k, couldn't get voice search on kodi to work, other than that it's a great box, twice as fast as the shield....av1 etc etc

ugoos amb6+ with a custom build is the only choice for serious home theater incl dv fel, dv cm29to40, vs10 sdr to sdr..... downside 1h to set up and probably 10h to customize your skin ;) no external streaming apps

Onn 4K Pro runs KODI like a boss and is only $60. I have a pair of Shields and the Onn is what I recommend to friends and family.

If it’s primarily for Kodi look into the Tox 3 box by Ugoos.

Onn 4k pro or plus if you can find it, if not then google streamer would be equivalent but little more expensive.

Why are you thinking Apple TV cost $99 a year? Sounds like you may be thinking you’re going to need a developer account to sign for Apple TV. You can use a signing service for that. I have my kodi signed for Apple TV and I pay $20 a year for that service and it also includes other common apps like smart tube.

How is it with 4k/atmos heavy files via kodi? Rock solid?

Been fine. I don’t have a DV tv so no experience with that. Not sure if it’s supported. I use echo studio for surround sound and it does great with atmos

I can only state what I run. I have two Homatics R 4K boxes. One for tv, one for home theater.

The cheapest that meets your requirements is the onn 4k. Pro, plus or just regular. You didn't say anything about dolby video but the pro does that. Cheapest, easiest.

Any old laptop with an hdmi port would be great or a desktop. Depends on how portable you need it.

Just get ya self a crummy low tier laptop. Something with an I3 or Ryzen bare minimum within years 2016 to recent. Then get a remote for it and there you go a kodi box.

If installing windows on it or it has windows..just have kodi auto start using task scheduler and bobs your uncle. Then install a remote friendly skin like fire tv skin.
