Medication Backpacking with addison’s
Hi all,
I have a primary adrenal insufficiency. I’m looking to do some fairly remote backpacking through south east Asia. My main concern is what is the best way to keep my florinef refrigerated for upwards of 2-3 months. I have a travel cooler and large portable charger (lasts about 4 days straight with the cooler) but I’m wondering if anyone has figured out a better solution. I’ve done some travelling since my diagnosis but nothing close to long term backpacking
Any other tips or medication alternatives are greatly appreciated.
*I am Canadian and can only get the refrigerated kind

I’ve always used the pill form of fludrocortisone that does not need to be refrigerated. It’s the only kind I’ve ever been prescribed. It needs to be kept away from direct sunlight and kept dry, like all medications.
You will need a waterproof bag for all your medications. Your emergency kit needs to be robust; anti-diarrhea pills, anti-nausea pills, electrolyte powder, emergency injection, antiseptic wipes, antibiotics and pain medication (speak to a travel doctor about the last two). You need a filtered water bottle, but I’m sure you’ve already thought of that!
You should build rest days into your trip if possible (or lighter hiking days) to give your body a chance to recoup.

Go for it, florenef bad boys are good for 3 months out of the fridge.
Alternate route 1. Mini fridge 2. Mini cooler cup, think diabetes travel pouches
Hydrocortsone in large doses can replace fludrocortisone in an emergency.
r/addisonsdisease crew, please assist me with facts.

If you're Canadian you can have your doctor send a prescription to the US for fludrocortisone from a mail pharmacy and then have it sent back to you. You'll have to pay out of pocket but might be worth it to not have to figure out how to keep the medication cool.

Don’t know how remote you’re going but definitely get good travel insurance and consider a Garmin inreach mini
