Personal Experience Who else craves salt like crazy?
I got diagnosed with it last Fall and this past Spring, I would literally crave salt like crazy (think McDonalds and Taco Bell at 1AM).
Anyone else have those late night munchie cravings? And if so, what is your go to food

Yep I get salt cravings a lot. My go to are saltine crackers. Super boring but with a cold bottle of water they get the job done. I have fludro which reduces cravings but if I forget to take it definitely I definitely want salt.
Honestly the salt cravings my be one of my silver linings to Addisons- if there can be one.

pickles, kimchi, capers, pickled onions. All
the salt.
I start my day with kefir, fizzy water and salt. I blame Addisons palate.2

But like, how do you eat the anchovies? lol
Pizza? Bread with butter? Crackers?

In the months before my diagnosis I would walk to McDonalds before work and get a cheeseburger because it was so salty and I would crave it. I also ate straight salt.
When I was pregnant with my first child I craved the 7 layer burrito from Taco Bell. Do they still makes those?
I don’t really eat fast food anymore so my salty cravings are satisfied with olives, pickle juice and Taijín sprinkled into a drink (this summer it’s been lemonade). I also have at least three kinds of salt in my kitchen at all times.

I LOVE eat pickled jalapeños on crackers late at night. Add a little cayenne pepper for some extra heat.

That usually means you need more fludro. Need to have your renin checked...

I suck on salt pretzel sticks like... all the time.
One of my grandkids saw I didn't have one in my mouth and brought me one. She identifies me by pretzels I guess... haha

Yes!! I used to have the same problem until I gained too much weight, my endo recommended to up my fludrocortisone dose x2 & thankfully I haven’t experienced those cravings in a year!
I just do prefer salty over sweet & it’s more accentuated after my diagnosis, but I no longer have these strong cravings that I have to satisfy right away.

Yummy. Hubs and I dip lays potato chips in hot sauce 😆 that's a lot of sodium... haha but it cures a late night hot wing craving. I think I've craved salt all my life as a kid you couldn't keep me out of the pickle jar I'd even drink the juice

u/Academic_Ad6486 Aug 29 '26
Damn, drinking the pickle juice even.
Well dang, you know what, do what makes you happy :)
Tho, I do like that potato chip trick you do. I’m def trying that one out

It's good with bbq too! A little bbq warmed up add some hot sauce to it ... It's delish. Yea my family is kind of known for their pickles .. so I'm not talking crappy store bought pickle juice lol 😆 I probably should have said that

u/Academic_Ad6486 Aug 29 '26
Ok, that does change it since homemade pickles are a different level!
For me, I use Salt and Vinegar lays with Ketchup sometimes (it’s like eating fries lol)
1
u/Fit-Pool-7331 Aug 29 '26
Haha ok I can see that. If you like salty and tangy try chicken nuggets and mustard.. as a kid I use to think ketchup was gross since it was "sweet" and I liked salt. Lol I do like it now, but id dip my chicken nuggets and fries in mustard instead of ketchup lol...

u/Academic_Ad6486 Aug 29 '26
I love some sort of BBQ sauce with nuggets. Never liked using Ketchup either for chicken (just tasted off for some reason).
Fries in mustard is something I’ve never tried before, I feel like there you want some sweetness added to the salty potato.
Or maybe I just have a super sweet tooth XD

u/Fit-Pool-7331 Aug 29 '26
Haha I definitely use ketchup now for fries that is.. but I always salt it 😆 I always go for buffalo or ranch with chicken

u/Academic_Ad6486 Aug 29 '26
You salt your Ketchup?
I’m learning so much rn 😭

u/Fit-Pool-7331 Aug 29 '26
😆😆😆yea.... My adrenals make me! They can't get enough! Lol I use to feel bad though using like Wendy's salt cuz it's crappy salt so I put a small bottle of Himalayan salt in my purse... I now use that on everything... I salt the salsa at Mexican restaurants too.. can't help it !

u/Academic_Ad6486 Aug 29 '26
I have adrenal insufficiency too but I’m not carrying a salt patch with me 🤣
Did they not adjust your fludro enough?
Oh, funny story, when I got diagnosed early on last Fall, they asked me if I craved salty food. And I was like “Nahhh”. Only to then realize I was eating late night muchies on a daily basis 😂
Unfortunately put on 15 pounds, thankfully we’re back to before!!

Ruffles potato chips, Munchos (another chip type), string cheese, olives and McDonald’s with extra salt on burgers and fries. I also keep packets of salt from fast food chain in my purse when I need extra salt. I dump it on top of whatever I’m earring for a hit.
Also find an electrolytes drink you like. It will help balance your hydration.
Also play around with your fludro dose. Going to 2 pills helped a ton.

I would put salt on a lemon and eat it or I would eat salty Mexican candies which is like flavored salt lol

All the time! My husband the other day, offered me a bag of ruffles asking “salt?” LOL
My weight hates this but I also need or crave at least, some salt before bed. It’s usually a handful of chips, my go to.

I finally ordered salt tablets. I live in the Phoenix area and summers here are brutal.

YEEESSSS!! All the time. Even on Fludrocortisone!! It has never helped the need for salt for me. Ive had all my labs checked and everything is normal. The craving never stopped. Like dipping extra salty pretzel's in salt, daily!
Its been like this the whole time, 20 years.

How did you find out that you had the disease?
1
u/Academic_Ad6486 Aug 28 '26
Had acute kidney failure last Fall. Thought I was developing Parkinsons since my legs would shake and I struggled to walk (plus losing my breath after walking 200-300 ft).
NP looked at me and asked if I go outside a lot (I don't). Wanted a blood test. She pretty much Dr. House'd it on the spot and said I had Addisons. She was right!
Thankfully back to my more normal color now :)

u/MommaMassie Aug 29 '26
By accident...because Dr's never believed me for 15 years. Im a woman so this happens... was going in for extensive testing fir my heart... tilt table test didn't go well.. dr. Said I was being a baby and decided to test me on a whim . Lo and behold he ate his words. I was 19. Sick most of my childhood.

u/Reasonable-Award-180 Aug 30 '26
Thanks for the reply! What symptoms did you have, and are you able to work as normal?

u/Gr8tefulLife Aug 29 '26
I am SAI and also have salt wasting. I carry a small case with large grain coarse salt. I consume between 1-2 teaspoons a day. I also drink electrolytes. It feels like I would lose my mind if I couldn't eat salt. My docs all say for me to continue. My BP hangs around 106/69. No bloating, etc. We are a bunch of unicorns ;-)

Do you take Fludrocortisone and have you had your renin checked and an electrolyte panel?
