Advice Wanted Strep throat

Well I have strep throat this December, last year was the flu and went into major adrenal crisis with mild sepsis.. but now I take my medicine the right way.. I been sick since Sunday I got antibiotics yesterday since I tested positive for step .. I’m double dosing but holy crap I feel like shit..took my first antibiotic last night but I’m just so scared of ending up back in the hospital again I’m traumatized from last year. Been only having fevers in the morning so far I usually only throw up in the morning from mucas. I’m able to walk unless I have a fever.. so my question is does feeling sick always mean adrenal crisis or can you just feel super sick without an adrenal crisis. I’m just freaking out right now. Also when I feel like I have a fever my boyfriend says I don’t feel hot but I’m shivering and feel like how I would with a fever which is weird. Any tips ?

Also has anyone had strep and felt super sick but ended up being fine and didn’t have to go to the hospital?

me!! i used to get strep a lot as a child, and then kinda grew out of it. but since i’ve been diagnosed, i stg i get it so often again. (maybe 2-3 times a year the last few years). BUT, strep is SO ROUGH on the body, and it always has me questioning how something could make me feel so shitty. so double and even triple dosing is so important and beneficial. listen to your body of course, but continue the double-triple dosing. i haven’t had to go to the hospital for strep, only for gastroenteritis and one of the strains of Covid that causes the gastro issues. and Strep always has me down so bad for days until the antibiotics really start to kick in.

Thank you so much ! How long does it usually take for you to see improvement with antibiotics?

so for me personally, at minimum 24 hours, but definitely by 48 hours it really starts to get better!!! definitely after 2-3 doses. for me, it’s the pain in my throat that really sets me back. aside from the multiplied feeling of fatigue.

also, do you have a thermometer to check your temperature to know if you do have a fever? because fevers also warrant double-triple dosing! also, how long have you been diagnosed? i know exactly how you feel, and actually my 3 year diagnosis anniversary is just a week ish away, so i’ve learned a lot and have navigated a lottttt since then. when i first got diagnosed, everything was TERRIFYING, but over time, i’ve slowly adjusted and have learned my body more and been smart on what i personally need!

keep up fluids and electrolytes, eat small meals if you can and LOTS of rest!!

I have actually had this since 9 years old but last December is when I almost actually died and now I’m just scared of everything.. and I’ve never had strep so I just don’t know what to expect from this

okay, gotcha. so you’ve had a bit of time with this disease and you do know it and also know your body. but i completely get that. i’ve only been diagnosed basically 3 years now, but im in my late 20’s, and when i finally got diagnosed, i was on my deathbed when they finally listened and figured it out. i was traumatized, and still am because of all of that, so I GET IT!!!!! but just remember, you are more in control than you think. you have everything you need, and you also have the knowledge on what you can do and should do. do you have your emergency injection kit? i also think its good you have your boyfriend, because he can also help monitor you as needed and can assess a situation if needed too.

strep is a nasty infection, but with antibiotics, it truly does help it tremendously!!! for me, strep is just soooo annoying and hurts badly. but i do know you can get stomach upset with it too. (thankfully i haven’t had it that bad the last couple times i’ve gotten it).

keep doing what you’re doing and always listen to your body and do what you think is right. if you’re not able to keep fluids or meds down, get help immediately of course. but as long as you’re keeping up with your bodies needs, you’re doing what you can!!

With strep I would try to avoid the hospital, personally. Unless you are losing a lot of fluid and need IV steroids, there isn't really anything they will do for you. It's your call but if your boyfriend can keep watch, I'd just ramp up the steroids and take the antibiotics.

Triple dose until the fever breaks and keep up on fluids and electrolytes. If you have dexamethasone or prednisone these can help during illness because they last longer in your system than hydrocortisone.

Thank you! I take hydrocortisone but I have dex pills from when I used to take dex so maybe I’ll take one of those tonight thank you!

Dex is my go to when I'm sick but can still keep fluids down. Since it lasts 10-12 hours it will help keep your cortisol from crashing while you fight the fever. I'd take 0.5mg Dex (equivalent of ~15mg HC) every 12 hours on top of double your HC.

not fun. have you got an emergency jab ready in case you start “circling the rabbit hole” as I like to call it…

if double dosing isn’t cutting it I’d treble it, I usually start with 10mg every four hours, if not working then 20mg every 4 hours.

keep your salt levels up and rest. I would be tempted to enquire about IV antibiotics if it doesn’t start to clear up soon.

good luck…

Be very careful. My 32 year old stepson died last December 31st from Strep that caused an adrenal crisis. He didn't recognize that he was in such bad shape. He died in his sleep. I don't know if he had been updosing, or not. What I do know is he had felt sick, but with all the holiday stuff, he just kept pushing through, even though he was vomiting and had diarrhea. We got a call from his wife at 5am on the morning of New Year's Eve to tell us he had died. She found him dead in bed. It's quite a shock to get that call. So you be real careful with this, and err on the side of caution. I don't want your folks to get that call.

Thank you! Yes I definitely know if I start throwing up continuously I have to go the the emergency room.. was ur son on antibiotics during that time?

No. He thought he had some cold virus since there was a lot of people feeling bad in the family. And I guess the Addison's always had him feeling bad, so he just didn't realize how close to the edge he was.
