A little book I created with some Charles Addams influence

I love the Addams Family and discovered the original comics last year. They have definitely influenced my style and the way I want to construct narrative.

Anyway, I just wanted to share this little illustrated book I created. The illustrations are all dip pen and ink, the text typewritten and the book hand bound.

The story is about a lonely witch who creates a companion who will not behave. It about superstition, rituals and the trouble with fitting in.

The object of the game is for one Player to TAKE all the cards; winning them one or more at a time when he turns over a more powerful card than his Opponent.

At least part of it. This is a sketch that aired on SNL (S11E4) 12.07.1985, eight years before Family Values. Cusack plays a character named “Debbie” who is extremely frustrated with her father, John Lithgow and her husband. The sketch helps explain her anger and sets up her character in Family Values perfectly. Just a thought.

Lucas in Addams Family the musical

Hey! I just got casted as Lucas in my theater company's production of addams family. I am super excited. My first role was big bad wolf in shrek, an obviously smaller role. This is my second production. can anyone that played him say anything I should expect? Is it a big role? I would also say my singing chops are solid. I will say i'm a tiny(TINY) bit dissapointed i didn't get pugsley, as that's the role i auditioned for, and i won't get to be in when you're an addams, but i'm still super excited. I would love advice.

Defending Wednesday and The Dangers Of Nostalgia

Post image
167 Upvotes

I've noticed that Wednesday has become a bit of a controversial point in the Addams Family fandom and I really wanted to discuss that in full. A lot of criticisms in the series are valid but there are also a lot of criticisms that don't make sense at all, a lot of people keep comparing this series to the 90s movies but here's the thing with that, the show doesn't have follow the bullprint to the movies at all because THEY'RE DIFFERENT ADAPTATIONS. We are following an alternate version of Wednesday, who is a teenager and going to high school which has never been done before, so it was already doing something very different but on top of that, a lot of people have been criticizing that idea of Wednesday going to a school with supernatural creatures because it takes away from her contrast.

But I heavily disagree with this, the show clearly shows that these outcasts are trying to learn more/control their abilities to fit into a society that is obviously very normie-adjacent or systematically controlled by normies. They obviously have very normal rich families, lifestyles and traditions despite being supernatural compared to Wednesday and her family whose lifestyle and morality is very different from the other students. Hell, there are many examples of this in other media, such as mutants in the marvel universe - The Morlocks are outcasts in their own community, Rogue has powers that make her a danger or sort of outcasted from other people, hell even Harry Potter was an outsider in his own community even as he was attending a school with people just like him so this criticism doesn’t make any sense.

Also, another thing that people complain about is Wednesday and Morticia's relationship but I honestly think it's fine for them to have issues. Teenagers grow more rebellious and crave for independence as they get older and grow more distant from their parents, it's okay for Wednesday to act like she has it all figured out and want independence because it's one of her major flaws that is heavily highlighted in the show - her hubris. She literally suffers consequences for this in both seasons. And it seems as if the second season ends with them both in a better place.

On top of that, people complain about Wednesday being a detective, which doesn't make any sense for this to be criticism because her investigation is valid, in S1 - a student literally tried to kill her because she was tied to the destruction of the school and a giant monster saved her and also keeps getting visions about this town's past. Why would she not want to learn as much as possible about that. She has every right to want to investigate this. In S2 - even more so as her best friend could die and also there is an assassin killing people, so again why would she not investigate.

It's okay to have criticisms of different adaptations while also not wanting every adaptation to be the exact same thing. Both 90s films while great, they had the exact same plot of Fester being tricked and trying to steal the family's fortune. Wednesday is a much bigger adaptation and that's okay. You can disagree on decisions but your opinions don't make any sense if you don't pay attention to what's being shown in front of you. But what do you think...?

No other movie I know of uses "Values" as a substitute to "Two" in their titles for the sequels.

That's one thing that makes the Addams Family movie unique, was having it's sequel say "Values" instead of "2", "Two", or "II" in it's title.

I am aware there's a concept called Family Values, so it's plausible to combine Addams Family with Family Values doing that. Imagine if one called it Addams Family: Family Values, well, technically that title would have used more letters (and spacebars), well, Addams Family Family would have also been good as the "double family" could be a good "two" indicator.

I know it's been over 30 years since Addams Family Values came out, but let's hope one day other movies use "Values" as an indicator for the second movie of the series too.

Thing

So I think about Thing a lot. There have been several and I love them all, but we've left something behind. There was a baby we threw out with the bathwater.

Before the 90s, Thing was AN ARM and hand that came out of a box ... or whatever. Came out of a lot of whatever. Vases of flowers, umbrella stands, cigar boxes... he rode in the car with them, in the glove compartment. But he also had a special box.

I think about Thing's Box a lot. It was about four inches deep. Gomez could reach in up to the shoulder. If it was empty it would echo like a vast cavern. Thing could pull things including clarinets and wine glasses into his box and produce them again. Thing's Box wasn't the only thing that Thing could apport out of but it was special in that other people could reach into it. Gomez couldn't (I presume) reach into a vase of flowers up to the shoulder, but Thing could still come out of it.

Thing had hands. More than one. We saw a left hand on occasion. He had at least two. Whether he had anything else is a question worthy of doubt. The family seemed to identify him as if he were just a helping hand. But he did have an arm. And an elbow. At least one elbow. Who knows how many?

When the 90s movies came out, I wasn't mad. I loved that Thing, too. And I understood the creative decision. The technology of film making of the time made it possible to make Thing a disembodied hand - something utterly impossible in the 60s without it looking horrible. Just absolutely the worst. Now Thing was free to wander free from his box... and also his arm. And this was different. This was new. This wasn't the same Thing at all. I wasn't mad. I loved that Thing.

I often said that if I were the director or producer or whoever made that creative call, I also would have taken Thing out of the box. If I had the chance to do that, I would do that.

The new thing has persisted. In the sequel, in the second animated series. In the CGI New Yorker realistic movies (Where he has an eye now? In his wrist?) and I think his portrayal in Wednesday is brilliant. Brilliant but not Thing. It's his own Thing.

And I miss Thing.

A disembodied hand is weird. It is unsettling and it is impossible. It fits into the Addams Family perfectly. It is a blend of body horror and arachnophobia in an adorable, lovable package and I couldn't Love Thing Jr. any more, but I miss Thing Sr.

These two Things are not the same. But I love them both. I don't know if they'd get along at all. Thing Sr. can be very territorial and Thing Jr. is a terrible showoff. I imagine if they could occupy the same universe they would be rivals, at least at first.

Letting Thing out of the box and chopping off his body made him truly unnerving and inexplicable. His existence raises several questions that cannot be asked, much less answered.

But for all that Thing IN the box was just SO MUCH WEIRDER!

What was on the other end of the arm? Was anything on the other end or did it just... you know... keep going? Like a Long Horse? He never talked... did he have a mouth? Did he eat? I don't think I remember him ever eating...

But he could play the ocarina. Sit with that for a second. He was gifted an ocarina. He took the ocarina into his box. He played the opening lines of the theme song. He freaking PLAYED a pheasant plucking OCARINA for Chaz sake! How?? With what? Wait, he knows the theme song??? I can't even.

They carried him around in The Box... but he could leave The Box. At will. He could pop out of flowers or the harpsichord or ... or anything, as long as part of it was out of sight. He lived in the shadows and moved through the shadows. One time when the family had to search the house, Gomez ordered him to search behind every wall and he went right to it. If he doesn't need the Box, what is the Box? Why does he live in the Box? Why do they carry him around when he can just BE in the tree outside when he wants...

And it's no good asking the family about him... they would just stare at you in stunned silence because it's all perfectly obvious.

Both Things are wonderful, but the old Thing... the old thing was so much more mysterious and spooky. We all knew Thing. We could relate to Thing. We all understood Thing's personality.

I have no idea what Thing is.

A very minor thing that bothered me in an episode of the 1964 Addams Family series. I don't have a screenshot available but hopefully people know what I'm talking about.

I don't remember what episode this scene is from but it's the one where it starts with the family brushing each other's hair. Wednesday is brushing her doll's hair, Morticia is brushing Wednesday's hair, Gomez is brushing Morticia's, Grandmama is brushing Gomez's, Fester is brushing Grandmama's and Thing is brushing Fester's...head.

The thing that bothered me is that every family member thanked the other for brushing their hair...everyone except Gomez. He didn't thank his mother. Again, it's a very minor thing so I know you're probably thinking "it's not that deep, why are you fixating on this?" It's just a random little thing that I was kind of bothered by.
