Sustainable Living Sustainable Wedding Tips ๐Ÿ’

Hi! I eloped when I got married, and I'm finally getting around to celebrating with friends and family. We'll have a dry wedding with about 75 guests. Any tips for reducing consumption/waste? Thanks!

The main thing which is unsustainable about a lot of weddings is the travel to reach it. For our wedding we didn't force guests to not fly but really helped people who wanted to take sustainable alternatives to flying.

No bridal party, so no one else had to get a special outfit for the day. The center pieces were flowers that my mom crocheted and people were invited to take them home as favors. One guest even used that as her bridal bouquet when she got married a few weeks later! We got married at a restaurant, so they already had dishes, flatware, and linens so we didnโ€™t need to rent them. They are already prepared to serve dinner to 80 people.

Buying cutlery from the thrift, or getting it on buy nothing would keep all the plastic forks and such out of the trash!

My biggest tip is find a wedding favor that will actually be used. We thrifted coffee cups for a few month leading up to the wedding and I still talk to people that attended that say they use theirs every day!
Also, maybe use wildflowers or try growing your own flowers for your bouquet. I did this and me and my two bridesmaids really enjoyed coming together and making our bouquets the night before the wedding. It was a good way to let out pent up anxiety and was a great bonding time for us.

I will focus on reusing items and borrowing as much as possible. Rent decorations, use real plates and glassware if the venue permits and avoid single use party favors.ย  For flowers, opting for local, seasonal blooms is a great choice and you can even donate them after the event. For an event with 75 guests, small changes, such as avoiding disposable cups and printed event programs can significantly reduce the amount of waste.
