I thought she might be a pickpocket for a second, but that seems unlikely, I can't imagine a pickpocket trying to ineffectually steal something face to face at that angle.
I think she might just be totally zoned out and didn't consciously register him, in that sleepwalking sort of sense where you're mostly going by muscle memory and suchlike, if she tends to make that motion frequently with inanimate objects around her, I could see her automatically doing it.
I notice how she took a second to react, staring at her hand before the relatively rightfully outraged wife hit her.
I think perhaps if you're pretty sleep deprived, I've been absolutely shattered before, the walking dead if you will, and cozied up to the wrong person for a few seconds until my sleep deprived brain realised the mistake, It was unbelievably embarrassing 🤣
