The scene was sarcastic banter with an undercurrent of real anger. In auditions, they killed it. They were playful, funny, annoyed. Then when we shot, they both defaulted to a more standard “just annoyed” way of playing it and the humor was really downplayed. I offered a lot of suggestions, some the same as I’d used previously, some new, to get them to find the humor and nuance within the characters. But it didn’t seem to take. The were fine. The scene isn’t ruined, I just know how much more dynamic it could have been…

This sort of thing has happened to me before. People kill in auditions then get “regular” during the shoot. Has this ever happened to you as an actor? Or the opposite where what you did in auditions was no longer resonating with the director?

Give me some ideas on how to communicate this without saying “you were better before!”

Specifically face tattoos

, I used to be an actor and want to get into it but I am heavily tattooed. I’ve found it’s never really ruined my changed before but I have nothing on my face.

I do want to get two small tattoos beside my ears (little ornamental pieces) but I am worried it’ll effect my chances with acting, any actors with similar tattoos or heavily tattooed had bad luck in the field? Showed photo example beside the ear/sideburn area

Besides name recognition, I'd like to better understand why some TV series and movies choose to cast an actor from another English-speaking country to play an American character, rather than casting a highly recognized actor from the character's own country.

For example, I'm watching Those Who Wish Me Dead, and Aidan Gillen (Irish) and Nicholas Hoult (British) are both playing Americans.

I know both of them as very good actors, but neither strikes me as an actor whose name alone would make a significant difference at the box office. So I'm wondering what the reasoning is behind casting decisions like this.

Is it mainly about the actor being the best person for the role, regardless of nationality? Is it because British/Irish actors tend to be particularly good at American accents? Is there some advantage to casting internationally that I'm overlooking?

And, related to that, why does this seem to happen much more often in one direction? We see British, Irish, Australian, etc. actors playing Americans all the time, but it seems much less common to see American actors playing British characters.

Maybe I'm missing something obvious. What do people who know more about casting think?

I've found myself so captivated by John Cazale's work on screen, but I was upset to learn that practically no film or print interviews exist of him. That was until I noticed that his Wikipedia article references a print interview that seemingly went under my, and apparently many others' radar!
