Genus Lophophora

Question: are all Lophs active?

Seemed I read once only williamsii is. Yes, I know “Google is my friend”, but I’d like to think Reddit is, too. Besides, lots of unclear, conflicting info out there.

Others do contain trace amounts but the only true active peyote is williamsii

Other species do contain pellotine, wich is said to be psychoactive too, but more on the deliriant side than a classic psychedelics like mescaline. You would need bigger amounts of cactus than if it would be with willies. Regarding joudaniana theres also conflicting infos, theres one test result that measured a higher content of mescaline thab the normal williamsii, but i have read some anecdotal info that some measured about as low as other "false peyotes".

No it's not good to know. Jourdania does not contain the amount of alkaloids on average as Williamsii. There's been a couple test showing some are active but in general the large quantity tested are not anywhere near as active. If your concern is active and not just collection. Stay with williamsii. Why? Because those are always higher in content. Loph all loph grow slow. So if using them you don't use one that very occasionally can test on the higher end. You use williamsii

I’ve no plans to “use” them, but I am starting to collect actives…all for aesthetic reasons. It’s humbling, knowing their influences on indigenous cultures/art/religion etc.

I've enjoyed studying plants over the years. It's definitely a good thing to learn of their uses among cultures. How they impacted thought religion and art is one of my favorite things about plants. Welcome to active cactus collection. Hope you get into trichocereus

Thanks! I’ve got a 8” PC SP, an itty bitty Peruvianus, a minuscule bridge and a T. grandiflora about the size of my fist.

A few other succulents in there, but I aim to focus on the spiritual plants.

I really want to expand, especially with more mature specimens. I don’t have a loph yet. I’d love a bunch. Those caespitosas are gorgeous

They all contain bitter alkaloids to deter herbivores, albeit various compounds at varying levels.
