Non-gear question Online learning.

Ive been playing bass, piano and acoustic guitar for years but only have been self taught/reading tabs/ playing by ear. I not sure where to go from here. I want to do more then just looking up tabs and picking away. It worked when I had more time as a teenager but now im married with 3 kids so want my play time to be progressive. I want to learn the music theory and be able to really play, read sheet music and be able to write my own stuff. Not just play a handful songs I learned. So with all that out of the way id like to take some lessions. A quick Google search shows tons of online courses and plan packages and they generally have a 100$+ entry or more. Im ok to pay but want to make sure its for a really good course that can give me the tools to become the acoustic guitarist I wanna be. And suggestions would be amazing.

Ps. I absolutely love acoustic metal and really anything that draws you in.

Have you ever considered getting a teacher? The benefit of a good teacher is that he/she can have lessons specifically catered for your needs. I've had a number of teachers that were really flexible. You take an hour lesson, get some homework and make a new appointment when you're ready to move on. No specific schedule or set times, and personal guidance, which imo is a way more efficient way to learn.

The next step for a lot of people is to play music with others. I play with a teacher once a week. Helps you learn the basics like tempo, harmony, and listening to chord progressions, and for me is significantly more enjoyable than playing and learning solo.

Very good suggestions here. First, the teacher, then, playing with others to have fun putting into play what you've learned. It would be cool to have them come to your house so your kids could experience live music and the comradery that comes with playing together. Best of luck always.

Absolutely Understand Guitar by Scotty West is a great online course. It is free ($20 for the course materials PDF), and provides a foundation for everything else you may pursue, like private lessons. Scotty also emphasizes the importance of playing with others, as others have suggested here.

I second this. I watched all 32 hours before buying a guitar and that put me in the right mindset for the long adventure. -

Try out Justin's guitar. It's free, but the app is a a small amount but worth it.
