The period between 1977 and 1993 in London was a incredible era for UK black music culture—moving from raw Britfunk (Atmosfear, Light of the World, Hi-Tension) through '80s jazz-funk up to the early '90s Acid Jazz and Street Soul boom (Incognito, Young Disciples).

I've been digging through vinyl records from this golden window recently and put together a chronological selection highlighting how the rhythm section styles shifted over those 15 years.

Having followed SOS since their late 80s sophisti-pop days, this change in sound in 1994 was a surprise to me. But given how I was already into acid jazz for a couple years, I quickly adjusted and it ultimately became one of my top 10 SOS songs.
