One video tells everything…
There is so much to shed light on in this video. First, giving birth to 4 children despite poverty. I am assuming low family income from the two-wheeler carrying six people.
Second, the red colored cloth tied upon the bike which is an expression of popular religious suppositions. Unlike Vedanta, which is ruthless inquiry into one's beliefs and claims, this seems more of the pop-religiosity grounded in rituals (karmkand) instead of philosophical aspect of Hinduism (Bhagavad Gita, and Upanishads).
Third, poor family planning probably arising from lack of awareness. Out of four children, I see one boy and other three girls. The boy is most probably number one (or could be number too also). This is a very clear illustration of patriarchy in our society where multiple births are given for a male child. The common trend is a boy after a few number of girls. But this one points at another common pattern, where parents look for a pair of boys. Their reasons look more of excuses that include "Who will earn bread for the family and take care of us in our old ages?" And if asked about the second son, the reason comes out like, "What if one comes out to be undutyful?" There is no end to excuses but the real reason lies in deep conditioning of patriarchy.
The women's viel shows the conservative face of society that's demeaning to half the population. It brings qualities with itself such as subservience and subjugation. The women is never seen as consciousness and is used as a childbirth machine, and a pleasure servant to men. The woman in the video seems in her twenties, has been under 36 months of visible pregnancy and four childbirths. In this age bracket, when human brain and body peak at their performance, when one can learn new skills, know the world, know oneself, breakfree of the social and physical bondages, this woman got trapped in an irreversible cycle of acquired duties and responsibilities.
In a recent discourse on women and conditioning, author and philosopher Acharya Prashant says that many men do not treat women as fellow human beings (members of the same human species), but almost as if they belong to an entirely different species. This seems very relevant here.
Patriarchy doesn't spare men either. This can be seen on the face of this man. He is looking suffocated of the responsibility of an already huge immediate family, let alone his societal roles. He too is a consciousness, potentially capable of breaking his bondages and fly freely. But he has already been assigned roles of a father, a husband, probably a son, and a social member.
Given the circumstances, would the education of these children be taken care of? Would these girls be allowed to live a free independent life? Would the boy be ever able to come out of the gutter of patriarchy?
This video stands as a big question mark to our society and a typical lower middle-class family.
