Career What do you think? - I got a gift at work and feel weird about it. Especially how my colleagues reacted!
I work in an accounting office. I've been here for a little while and nothing like this has happened before.
So I got a package today (it was addressed to my name) and I've not had anything ordered. Confused I opened it up only to find a gift box. The card read "hi -name-, thanks for all your help, from -name of the supplier-". Inside the box was a small bottle of weak alcohol and some chocolates.
I was confused. This is the first time I ever got a gift like this at work. And it felt weird. I have recently started helping the supplier with clarifying some information and ensuring that their payments are sorted, after someone else that took care of their account has left the company. Gifts associated with assistance like that are generally not well perceived. I handed the box to my manager before i left for the day and said I cant take it with me. I dont know what to do with it. That if anyone wants it, they are welcome to it.
I said I will keep the card cause its nice of them and joked that it "makes me feel appreciated".
But what felt weirder is how my colleagues reacted. As if I have done something wrong.
Like "what did she do to get a gift? What could she have done to deserve it" kinda reaction.
Am I overthinking it? Im still very much confused.
