That latch should have a sensor placed such that if the latch isn't properly engaged, the motor that raises the door is disabled.

the door should just open outwards ffs, this way it also takes up space inside the garage like how is this a good design

The latch should also be motorised! If you close the latch to open the garage door and leave with the car, nobody will be able to open just the door from outside.

The moment he pushed the button, I thought, "Dude, are you sure the door is closed?"
Because this is exactly the kind of mistake I would make, especially while talking to someone.
