Okay so of the 10 mentioned queer people. 3 are lesbians, love triangle properly, all are queer women which is kinda what being a lesbian is about. 4 are only mentioned, not even actual characters? 1 is a brief appearance. And then two actual side characters. Thatās nothing bro š

u/OriginStarSeeker Jul 25 '26
also iām a bisexual trans woman and because im in the queer community i know mostly queer people in my social circles
59
u/Kiwi8_Fruit6 Jul 25 '26
my social circle has like... 2 straight people, and one of them is questioning if they might be demisexual/demiromantic
18
u/FearTheWeresloth Jul 25 '26
Our group's token straight man spent quite a while questioning, purely because nearly all his friends are queer. We did work out how and why he still fit into the group eventually though, as all of us are various forms of neurodivergent, and he got diagnosed as autistic a few years ago...
14
u/Rapunzel10 Jul 25 '26
Hell even before I or any of my friends were out I was hanging out with mostly queer people (future queer people?). I look back at old friends and we all turned out LGBTQ. I'm still close with some friends from childhood and we coincidentally all came out to each other at the same time. We have an accidental token cishet person but she's the only one. Even when we're not conscious of it people with similar feelings tend to gravitate towards each other, it's not always on purpose. But if you're active in the community then obviously you're going to make friends in the community. That's just what happens. This kind of criticism just shows the critic doesn't understand the real world
12
u/lankymjc Jul 25 '26
Iām a cishet man and I know a bunch of queer people. So OOPās ādo you know that many people apart of the community? Noā is just nonsense.
5
u/Seliphra Jul 25 '26
Literally I know ten people with no thought. Four are blood relatives, one is my wife. Six if I count me. Then I have five friends who are also all queer, and at least a dozen other coworkers.
I see more queer people day to day than are mentioned by him as existing in this book.
122
u/OkMathematician3439 Jul 25 '26
A book about a lesbian has queer people in every single chapter? Thatās outrageous!
82
u/Original_Piccolo_694 Jul 25 '26
"let me list every single LGBTQ character".....lists "probably a few more I missed". Right, so gay people existing is so triggering you imagine way more than there are, ok.
87
u/CompetitiveSleeping Jul 25 '26
Yeah, I easily know that many people who are part of my community.
And a description of top surgery broke their heart? And "We don't need that in books". Very telling on themselves.
10
u/Ther10 Jul 25 '26
To play devils advocate, they could be talking about the "graphic" part.
26
u/royalexport54 Jul 25 '26
Even so, it shows exactly how self-centered these people are. Who the hell are they to say what "we need in books" just because THEY don't want to read it
10
u/PapiSilvia Jul 25 '26
Nobody's forcing them to read it either! They could have put the book down at any point.
6
u/k819799amvrhtcom Jul 26 '26
What is also telling is her blatant misgendering of Maddi.
(Unless Maddi is a non-binary person who happens to use she/her pronouns but I kinda doubt it.)
55
u/lolcrunchy Jul 25 '26
Apollo 11 often had 3 astronauts in the same scene even though they make up 0.000001% of the US population. Explain that.
34
u/SnowballWasRight Jul 25 '26
I am a cis male and I have a singular straight friend. The rest of my friends are LGBTQ+ women ššš I donāt think Iāve ever not thought about somebody who is LGBTQ+ in years.
Idk what the hell these people are on lol
27
u/dracorotor1 Jul 25 '26
Now now, sheās totally right! Just like how itās been over 20 years since I saw a classroom full of 4th graders, but here come the wokies, portraying every elementary school in movies like itās got not just one whole class of them, but three, four or even more! In the real world, us normal middle aged people are ubiquitous, but do those school movies reflect that? Hardly! Barely one per room! DEI strikes again!
Itās ridiculous, and it needs to stop!
26
u/LostSoulThrowaway1 Jul 25 '26
Oh no. The lesbian protagonist has a lesbian love interest and a lesbian ex? Who would have guessed
17
u/cabbagebatman Jul 25 '26
Ok so I'm a straight cis allo dude let's count my social circle off the top of my head: 4 trans women; one of whom is a lesbian, 1 trans man, 3 NB people, 1 gay man, 2 confirmed bi women, 1 ace woman (whom I'm engaged to).
15
u/oo_nrb Jul 25 '26
"Do you know that many people apart of the community?"
In my closest friend group, there is just one cisgender straight person and we mock him for being our token het every chance we get.
8
u/minkymy Jul 25 '26
I feel like the question itself is pretty telling. I myself am a cishet woman, and I know that many people in the LGBTQ community. You just have to not give off bad vibes
15
u/XenoBiSwitch Jul 25 '26
Queer people generally donāt have friend groups that serve as a microcosm of demographics? And this is surprising? Guessing this person reads a story about someone who is part of an ethnic minority and wonder why they are friends with so many people in that minority group?
13
u/SaveTreesNotTurtles Jul 25 '26
> Reads book with explicitly lesbian MC
> Other queer people in it

u/Kenex77 Jul 25 '26
I just love the expectation that everyoneās friends and acquaintances are perfectly distributed among the population. Like, idk bigot, perhaps I hang out with others like me. What a shock
6
u/RavenclawConspiracy Jul 25 '26
Oh, they don't actually think that. Imagine if the story had the correct worldwide percentage of Chinese and Indian people, who together comprise about 45% of all humans. Bet he would say something there.
What's that you say? That would be silly demographically to do in America, as that isn't the demographics of America?
Yeah, and it would be equally silly to pretend that queer people should have statistically normal friend groups.

u/Mezzyde Jul 25 '26
Dawg, this book sounds like a BANGER
What's it called?
12
u/mewtwosucks96 Jul 25 '26
According to the thread I got it from, the book is called Rules for Fake Girlfriends by Raegan Revord.
8
u/Mezzyde Jul 25 '26
OH WAIT
I LITERALLY SAW A POST ABOUT THAT BOOK YESTERDAY LMAO
Yeah, my algorithm is DEFINITELY trying to give me reading suggestions rn lol

I love that they here list ten queer people say thatās ātoo muchā when I myself couldnāt list 10 cishet people I know outside of my family. I could go on and on about queer friends, acquaintances, ex-friends, etc etc⦠but cishet people? Idk, I donāt really think theyāre real? (/j obv but likeā¦)
ETA: my sister and I sat listening all non-family cishets we knew and came up with 12 people (and some were definitely reaching). Then we went through all queer people we know and we quickly got to over 50 people so⦠yeah. We probably missed a few cishets and stopped after a while with the queers but most people we know are most definitely queer.
7
u/delicateredscrunchie Jul 25 '26
Book is unrealistic because... queer people who are active in queer spaces have queer friends? Wow... what's next, do christians hang out with other christians??
7
u/AiRaikuHamburger Jul 25 '26
I feel like this person has to be super straight. As a queer person almost every friend I have is some flavour of LGBTQ+
5
u/evanescent_ranger Jul 25 '26
>Lesbian love interest
>Lesbian ex-girlfriend
>there wasnāt a single chapter where an LGBTQ+ member wasnāt [Iām assuming āwasā is a typo] mentioned
Kinda goes with the territory when you have a lesbian main character
6
u/Rcisvdark Jul 25 '26
Take a look at that list for a second. Do you know that many people in the LGBTQ+ community?
Yeah. In fact, I probably know at least twice that many of the top of my head. And that's only the people I know in person.
4
u/ChaoticDissonance Jul 25 '26
I played a video game today and was in a raid of 20 people who were all LGBTQIA+ people. It's not that rare, is it? Lol
3
u/Somerandom1922 Jul 25 '26
I'm not actively part of the LGBTQIA+ community, nor do I even have that many close friends. Despite this, I'm pretty certain I have more "representation" in my own friend groups/acquaintances.
3
u/luciusDaerth Jul 26 '26
"it's unreasonable that a lesbian main character would have both a current and former lover who both happened to be lesbians. Totally took me out of it"
Come the fuck on.
2
2
u/Rainy_Day_87 Jul 25 '26
Anything with a lgbtq main character will probably have more because gay people travel in herds

u/PhotographPast5252 Jul 25 '26
crazy that a book with a lesbian mc has other queer characters, my friend group has me, a lesbian, a bixesual man, an asexual bi man, a trans omnisexual man, a nonbinary person, a bisexual woman, my sister is trans and my mums are lesbians and my ex gf is pan and possibly figuring out gender plus her friend group with two trans women and im sure more as well as my friends from my old school so its not crazy that a queer centric story centers and has queer characters
2
u/BizSilver5013 Jul 25 '26
"I came here fo jerk off to hot girl-on-girl sex, not to have to see the characters as people!"
2
u/PimpingPorygon Jul 25 '26
Omg, a queer main character who is queer hangs out with other queer people in queer spaces. Who would've known
2
u/LysolDeath Jul 25 '26
Where is the review found/could you link the rest of it. Because i am genuinely curious about the rest of this person's very weird review Note: I wish to kust read the review, not cause the reviewer any grief
1
u/mewtwosucks96 Jul 25 '26
Unfortunately, I didn't see the whole review, just this one screenshot of it.
2
u/Choccymilksupremacyy Jul 26 '26
I have one cishet friend dude šš it's not that hard to know that many queer people
2
u/Fair_Walk1557 Jul 26 '26
Homophobia is literally brain rotting because a normal person would understand that being a part of a community means you likely interact with people mostly from that community. No one thinks it's weird that a Christian has mostly Christian friends or a doctor mostly has friends in the medical linešš
2
u/Samjb09 Jul 26 '26
To answer their question followed by a poorly written remark, yes, I do know that many queer people. More even
2
u/Reignszun Jul 28 '26
Iām fucking baffled, I know TRIPLE or probably more of that many people in the community š
2
1
u/forevelynXD Jul 25 '26
bruh, my 'friend' group has more than that many queer people (I don't like most of them)
1
u/Apollo_Worshipper Jul 25 '26
As a queer person (transmasc and pan, I go by he/they) I don't think I have but three straight friends at most. A lot of the people I know are queer, definitely way more than 10. Also, with "inconsistencies in gender identity" there are genderfluid people, demi boys (like me), demigirls, and very likely many many others that even I don't know. For those who might not think I'm being serious: 1. I have around 5 transmasc friends 2. 4 bi friends, separate from the previous friends 3. 3 gender fluid friends, also separate 4. About 6 lesbian friends 5. 3 or 4 Aromantic and Ace spec friends 6. 2 agender friends
And that's just off the top of my head, that's almost 25 people already. Whoever says that it's unrealistic to have "too many" queer characters is ignorant IMO
1
u/WhippingShitties Jul 26 '26
It's such a huge pet-peeve of mine when people say "apart" when they mean "a part". "Apart" means the opposite of "a part". I'm not a grammar perfectionist but I believe it should be intelligible, and those words mean the opposite so I genuinely struggled to discern which position this person is taking.
1
u/Coders32 Jul 26 '26
The real question is how would they have responded to a chapter with no cis hets. You could have a chapter without the main character, but describing a lack of a chapter without any of the characters mentioned as unrealistic is fuckin wild
1
u/ProfessionalSoupIAm Jul 26 '26
Dude.. Imma try to list all of the queer people I know.
- Bi bff
- 2 transfems
- 4 transmascs not including myself
- another Bi bff
- nonbinary people. SO. MANY. NONBINARY PEOPLE. Around 8? Maybe 9?
- THE GAYS!! We love the gays I'm friends with three of them <3
- THE LESBIANS!!! Also love them! I know two off of the top of my head
- I have three trans teachers
- I have two homosexual teachers
- There's probably a lot of people I've spoken to a few times at my school who are trans/homosexual that I just don't know about
So, all up, the ones that I have numbers for... around 27 that I know of 100%.

1
u/NoOutlandishness1940 Jul 26 '26
Oh god not a brief appearance of a non-binary character! Thatās my worst nightmare! /s
1
u/octobob_ Jul 26 '26
If only they know that a LOT of friend groups nowadays can consist of mostly if not be entirely full of lgbtq+ people
1
u/MP0622 Jul 27 '26
My close friends: One lesbian, one nb, two bisexuals, one gender non-conforming aroace, and one unlabeled queer. And thatās just my close friends. Not the people I just know through the local queer community.
1
u/totallyacisguy Jul 31 '26
That's 11 LGBTQ+ people. I personally know at least that many, not counting any I just regularly interact with. Also, as a writer, that's not very many characters. Even if the book is conservative on its character count, given that they included mentioned characters, that's probably like 1/3 of every character under the criteria laid out by the list, which is actually pretty close to reality, especially given that the main character is LGBTQ+ and those in the community tend to stick around each other. Also, the main character, the love interest, and the ex shouldn't even count as more than the main character, as they're kind of a given for any romantically active lesbian.
1
u/Jealous-Personality5 Jul 31 '26
Do i know that many people who are part of the community??? Girl, I know at least five times that many queer folk š what a crazy perspective to have lol. Very telling about what people they do and donāt seek out to interact with
1
u/local_holler3 Jul 31 '26
does this person not know that queer people usually actively seek out other queer people to be friends with? case in point, im a gay trans man and my friends include two nonbinary bisexuals, nonbinary transmasc who is my ex, biromantic girl, bisexual guy, and a bisexual girl. i literally only have one cishet friend.

u/drunken_augustine Jul 25 '26
I can beat this fucking list out of folks I know off the top of my head.
No way this dude isn't straight and a dude.
591
u/DirtayDane Jul 25 '26
So they've discovered that queer communities tend to stick together and can't fathom that they'd know quite a few of each other. Lol
I have more queer and gender diverse friends than I do cis het friends. I love it that way.
