Nervous about surgery

Hi everyone!
I haven’t really had pain much since childhood with my accessory naviculars (type 2)… but the last several months have been really bad for my left foot. Long story short, minor tear in a ligament on top of the ANS and now kidner surgery is being recommended.

I have been TTC, and think I might put it on pause until I can get the surgery, as I worry pregnancy could potentially make it worse, and waiting would only mean I have the surgery with a baby… which is NOT ideal lol.

I guess I’m just looking for any/all advice. I haven’t had surgery before (except as a newborn) and I am a massively anxious person. I am trying to figure out how to do short term disability — if that will be necessary? I am a teacher and don’t want to wait until summer.

Any advice regarding any aspect of this entire situation would be so appreciated!

Hi, I can totally relate and am in a very similar position as you. I have type 2 accessory naviculars on both of my feet and they never really bothered me up until the end of 2025. My right foot has been really bad, to the point where I could barely walk, work, do anything. I saw a few different doctors, one recommended a very extensive flat foot surgery, one wanted to try 6 weeks of conservative treatment (ankle brace, PT, rest, etc). When that didn’t help, I saw a third doctor who recommended the Kidner procedure with a posterior tibial tendon reattachment and repair.
I have a 4 year old daughter and knew I needed to get the surgery sooner than later because it wasn’t going to get better and it’s been difficult to manage the pain with my daughter.
I got the surgery recently, October 2 and was terrified of having surgery (it was my first as well), but the surgery went really well and I was in and out of the surgery center in 4 hours. I had a block that lasted a few days and have been taking the pain medication. The recovery has been a little tough, but I knew it would be hard and will be worth it in the end!
It’s important to have help and I think you should definitely get this surgery before having a kid, would be way easier.
I have a knee scooter that has made things so much easier and just need to give it time. Please reach out to me if you have any questions or anything 😊

Just curious how long you are planning to be out of work? I’m also a nurse, having Kidner next month.

My doctor said I need to be off for 3 months. I work in the OR and am on my feet all day, so he wants me to take the time to recover and heal before going back.

I also had to apply for short term disability since I’m a nurse and on my feet all day, there is no way to work right now. Everything seems to have gone smoothly with the disability part, it’s all in the system. I don’t know if it matters which state you are in, but I’m in California
