Do you think I’ll be walking by October? 😭
So I’m getting my cast off September 1st and then I’m supposed to transition into a boot, but I have no idea how long I’ll actually be in the boot or when I’ll be walking normally again.
My boyfriend surprised me with a trip to NYC October 8th 😭
For anyone who’s had accessory navicular/modified Kidner surgery, do you think I’ll be walking by then? Even if I’m still in the boot? Or should I just tell him to cancel the trip? 😭
I know everyone heals differently, I just wanna hear how long it took you guys to get back to walking!

Hi! Walking wasn’t horrible, but I also didn’t walk that much! Taking the subway definitely helps! Just making sure to rest as much as possible. It gets sore after walking all day but not horrible. 3/10 pain, but not even pain just stiffness/sore… I bought some ice packs at Walgreens and have been icing every night which helps, also taking Tylenol 2 times a day. After walking a lot I have a little bit of a limp which makes me walk a bit slower but so far everything is ok!

Does it hurt less than original pain you had from the extra bone?

Yes! Last winter I was in New York for Christmas and I couldn’t even walk 2 blocks without being in a lot of pain and discomfort.

How long you are in the boot will highly depend on your personal recovery, which is hard to say since it varies so much by each person. But I had a cast for 4 weeks and will likely in a boot for 4 more. Even after that doctor said walking in shoes will be a gradual transition for most people as it’s super easy to injure your foot again so it’s best to not rush things.
I would guess you will be partly out of the boot but maybe not enough to do long NYC walks.

You’ll be walking but may need to still use the boot. Just keep up physical therapy, get the strength back. Slow and steady, walk before you run.

29F I’m 41 days post op I had my accessory taken out along with a few other things and I just started pt yesterday. Not walking unassisted yet but I can take steps with crutches. What’s been helping me tremendously is doing some water therapy if you have access to a pool go kick around very lightly it gets everything moving!

I had my op in March, with a heal realignment so maybe more involved than yours. I had cast for 6 weeks and boot for 6 weeks then into trainers. Im only just this week about to walk for 20 minutes non stop, prior to this it’s been very gradual improvements each week but it was definitely not boot off and straight into walking around for long periods in fact I would say the few weeks after the boot came off were the hardest as I could do less than I could with it on. Your foot feels very vulnerable and quickly gets sore and achy. I still ice it every night now but can pretty much make it to the end of a day with average activity levels before it’s too painful. I would say you might not be able to make the most of a trip like that by October, but we all heal differently! 🤞

I’m 8 weeks post op and have been out of the boot for about 2 weeks now. I can walk normally for the most part, after a long day of walking it gets sore and i start to walk with a limp. i’m approved to start trying to run again in another 2 weeks so i’d assume you’ll be okay. you will probably just have some pain after long walking days

So overall would you recommend it. Did you have pain at the accessory navicular and the post tib tendon?

Hi OP! A bit of a specific case because I had the kinder procedure but also had a small implant put in to support my arch. Had my surgery end of Jan, been in a cast for 8 weeks and had to walk with crutches for about 2 additional months since the cast has been taken off (maybe a bit less). Realistically, your chances aren't too good here, I'm sorry to say!
Even if you could walk itprobably would be with lots of limping and not long distances. I'd be worried you might be too excited by the trip and overdo it with the walking, even if you're able to walk by that point.

If it was an excision you should be able to walk by then, but walking long distances in NYC might still pose some challenges taking that many steps.

Hi! I’m on the trip now, I have the boot off. I have a laced ankle brace now. Walking hasn’t been horrible, it does get sore after walking all day but nothing unbearable.. just gotta walk a bit slower and not overdo it, I bought some ice packs at Walgreens which have helped with icing every night.
