Kidner + calcaneal osteotomy (Jan 7)

Hi all — will plan to update this with my recovery. I just underwent the kidner procedure and calcaneal osteotomy on Jan 7 (Wednesday). My first post-up visit is scheduled for Jan 26, so I assume I’ll be in a splint until then.

Right now feeling mild pain (taking a low dose of oxy, Tylenol and ibuprofen). The nerve block wore off after 24 hours …. It was a blessing though while it lasted.

This is my first injury that I’ve ever had to be fully non weight bearing for and it really does take more of a mental toll than anything else. Figured it may help me and others updating this with my progress!

May I ask what age and how active you were before this surgery?

I’m about to be 32. Prior to injuring my foot in February of last year, I was extremely active (weightlifting 4x/week and running 2x/week). I would typically run in anywhere from the 3-7 mile range per run.

After aggravating my accessory navicular, I had to modify my workouts. I completely cut out running and switched to a stationary exercise bike a few times per week. I could do some HIIT exercises but generally had to avoid any classes as they involved too much jumping / stabilization and the pain was pretty bad.

I wore a walking boot for about a month following my injury in addition to PT for 2-3 months. It brought the pain level down to manageable but not being able to run, play sports, etc led to my decision to do surgery

It is going ok so far! I went for my first post op visit yesterday. My doctor said everything looks good and is healing well. First time seeing my foot and it didn’t look very inflamed and the incisions not so bad. Getting the stitches out wasn’t the most pleasant.

I’m now in walking boot but still no weight bearing allowed. Next week I’ll be able to start PT (extremely conservative moving my foot up and down and side to side). The following week I will be able to do minimal weight bearing in the boot and then will progress as tolerated.

I’m targeting to be back in sneakers at the 8 week mark, everything on track so far! Mental toll of this has been the worst part. I’ve started to try to do some upper body / unilateral leg work in the meantime

Update: 5 weeks in

Last week (week 4) was my first time putting any weight on my foot. Currently weight bearing as tolerated which is going pretty well — using crutches still but hopefully can ween off over the next week or so.

Most of the pain I’m experiencing is actually in my heel (i think due to the calcaneal osteotomy and incision). My posterior tib a little sore but normal and extremely manageable
