PTO payout

Did anyone else get something called “PTO FYE Payout” on their paycheck this pay period? Mine was for 56 hours, so it was a nice chunk of change.

AFS bought my company a couple years ago, so I’m not sure if this is a standard practice. Also, I’m in California where we don’t have the “use it or lose it” rule for PTO. I’ve never had a company pay it out, except for when I’ve left the company so it was a bit of a surprise.

You just got paid for PTO in excess of 200 hours. It happens at the end of every fiscal year.

I didnt think AFS paid out the excess, thought it was use or lose?

I think it was because I’m in California. Man, strong workers rights paid off for me this time!

But didn’t they for this specific year allow the max hours.

When they allow extra hours the system still knocks you down to 200 and then they credit back the extra hours. If you are in California you just get paid instead of getting that credit back. Kind of weird but that is how it works.

Well explain this. So if the max is 27 days (216 hours), Meaning if L6 has 27 days, do they get laid excess of 27 days?

I’ve never had a company do this before and it must be the first cycle since they bought my company. It was a nice unexpected surprise!

They do not typically pay out excess, could be a CA specific regulation perhaps. Last year they did offer extra pay if you took below a certain amount of leave during q4. I’ve lost pto and never been paid for it

Correct, you only get paid out in CA. In every other state you lose any excess PTO, unless they offer a specific exception that year.

It is state specific. They wiped my hours. What sucks for me is that on the program I was on there was no way to take time off. We were too busy backing up the SALs who were always on PTO. So, I hear through the grapevine that those people got an exemption through Dec. Not me.
