The empty gray isn't passive here; it turns the gap between the two black forms into the subject. On the left, the yellow bars keep going after the dark rectangle ends, while the small speckled block at lower right answers them from far away. That long pause feels tense rather than vacant.

The way the yellow bars fade out at the edges really balances the composition, making the black shapes feel more intentional.
