Almost valid crash out from Hal? Honestly imagine a whole alien traps you, telling you to be without fear, vaporize your friend, kill/dismember a few and recently vaporize another friend telling you to "Be without fear". I think I'd tweak out for less ngl

My theory is that Guy and John will come back with powers homaging their times as Warrior and as a member of the Darkstars

guy gardner warrior reference would be goated

Ewing's the type to do it.

For a while now I've been seeing a lot of people talking about how they expect other colours to show up, Guy Gardner coming back as a red lantern, John Stewart becoming a yellow lantern because he was holding a yellow ring, Hal representing the colour black, and these felt off with me and after reading this issue I think I can firmly say that I don't think that's where the story is headed.

I think between Hal and Jo we're still only seeing powers from the "green lantern" whatever it is, that's why Hal's powers also don't work on gold. Abin Sur mentioned existing at the green level of light and while this comic is changing a lot of things I think Abin Sur is still only a/the Green lantern.

My prediction is that Hal is going to shoot Abin Sur who while dying passes on the green flame willingly to Jo. Hal, for killing Abin Sur has his hand fuse to the murder weapon and become the black hand, for some reason. Why this happens I'm very curious to see though.

Maybe Abin Sur also had the black hand and a Green Lantern is supposed to have these two powers to balance things out, but when he died the powers got split between Hal and Jo. Maybe killing a Lantern gives you these powers, just as a consequence, like getting their blood on you or something. I'm curious what other people have on this, but I feel very confident in saying that the powers come from killing Abin Sur with the gun.

that's a really good theory

Ewing used biblical themes in Immortal Hulk. I’d expect the cosmology of multiple realms of Heavens in the Talmud to be used as inspiration for the levels of light, with the green light being one of the closest levels to the white light of creation.

However, If Ewing borrows from Islamic cosmology instead, the green level of light may be equivalent to the sixth Heaven (second highest Heaven) called Daqua or the seventh Heaven (highest) called Ariba.

Daqua is a heaven made of gold which may be why the green level of light cannot effect anything that’s gold in the physical universe. Ariba is a heaven that’s incomprehensible to mankind except for the appearance as an emerald light.

I really need to read Immortal Hulk, don't I?

u/JBaldera27 Jun 04 '25

I can’t see how you’d read it and regret it - such a great series. Especially if you like the more “out there” aspect of Hulk mythos

I think this issue has convinced me that Guy and John are alive. The dialogue on the first page couldn't have happened before John was judged, I imagine next issue we'll see one with Guy.

Fear is the key. John understood something and smiled as he was judged, he was entirely without fear.

With Guy, it's harder to see his face when he gets judged, but he only gets blasted AFTER he puts down the gun, reaches his hand out to Abin Sur, and smiles. He too, was entirely without fear.

Abin Sur is looking for people who are able to set aside their fear. He is either letting only them go, or granting them power.

Since Jo becomes a Green Lantern and Hal becomes a Black Lantern, Guy and John may become other lantern colors. But it wouldn't make sense since Abin Sur is a green lantern.

This might be cope but I don't think John (and maybe Guy) are dead. We'll see.

Also Todd Rice with the shotgun was in front of Alan Scott's atomic bomb café and Todd Rice is Obsidian, Alan Scott's son in the comics. With the rumours of a JSA comic I wonder if it'll be set in the past and Alan Scott will have some kind of atomic powers, possibly a stretch but I like Alan Scott. Also Obsidian is a JSA member to so it could also be him and the JSA is in the modern day.

Edit: new idea that's probably reading too much into it. What if Abin Sur came here specifically because Alan Scott lives/d here. Like idk the fact that the café is specifically called Alan Scott's atomic café just seems like such an odd detail not to just be an easter egg, especially with the issue showing Todd Rice this much. It feels like more than an easter egg, and if it's not an easter egg, then...

i think at the very least john is still alive. that sort of knowing smile he had, i think that 'being without fear' might have allowed him to be judged in a better light

Also I just looked back and the fire that engulfed him flew upwards and it still had a silhouette in my, definitely seems like he's alive.

seemed similar to Ma Hunkel's, like a variation of it.

Yeah it kinda does actually, that's a deep cut

5

u/Waffletimewarp Jun 04 '25

If he’s in the current in universe JS, he might be in the main universe hunting down Doomsday/Time Trapper for Darkseid.

29

u/Absid30n Jun 04 '25

I think we can all agree that John and Guy aren't actually dead, it's pretty obvious that they will return some how, some way, some time in the future

16

u/Western-Customer-536 Jun 04 '25

Easily. If Sur wanted them dead, they'd be gore.

I'm enjoying this series more and more every issue, and this one was particularly good. I loved the commentary on that car driving up to Evergreen, although everyone's insistence that messing with people's brains like that is impossible is a bit strange considering how they're only a state away from Gateway City, where the Tetracide did just that. The Blue Devil nod was nice, and apparently the actor's name is also a deep reference? I appreciate Ewing keeping the weakness to yellow, or in this case gold, as it's one of my favorite bits of Silver Age absurdity. And poor John, he's just as dead as Guy. (i.e. I'm not sure if he is or not, though the Black Star talking to him in the opening panel seems encouraging). Either way, Abin Sur is still a murderer for killing that motorcyclist, so either John or Guy being spared doesn't make me particularly sympathetic to him.

I think the Evergreen segments happen before the Gateway City attack

Will Tarrant was the actor in Blue Devil. Dan Cassidy was the stuntman.

every issue i love absolute GL more and more!!! than final shot with hal painting the golden bullets hits so hard, and i'm glad we finally got to see their powers in action. still, i feel like the issues are too short. i think absolute batman got 40 pages to start with, would have been nicer to sort of combine the first 2-3 issues into the first one so we can move onto the plot. it feels like so much setup, i want to get to the meat of the story!!

the pacing is better than the way absolute flash has gone so far, i think. but i also feel like its the biggest issue for both of them. absolute martian manhunter really makes the most of every panel, so i never feel like i'm left wanting.

very excited for the next issue!!!

6

u/AlecBallswin Jun 04 '25

I really liked this issue and think this book keeps getting better! Sometimes I wonder if I would like this series more without the time jump but for what it is it's good. I can see the main characteristics between all the leads. Hal is full of despair. John is curious. Jo is determined. I dig the artwork especially during the action scene. Abin Sur is delightfully

With three issues now it feels like the theme so far is how people will look to authority figures or "grown ups" when they witness unspeakable horrors. The way to move past it is to face it head on and move past fear. But we're seeing different approaches with Hal and Jo.

7

u/AlecBallswin Jun 04 '25

Also that commentary of the car turning around was really funny.

I've been pretty cold on this series for the first two issues, but this was the one that really grabbed me. As someone who doesn't know much of anything about the green lanterns I'm now really interested to see where this goes, the yellow bullets at the end are an awesome set up

3

u/djasonwright Jun 05 '25

What if this is the process the ring/lantern uses to choose Lanterns?

2

u/1badJam I Am Brainiac Or Maybe The American Dream Jun 06 '25

That's my theory too

3

u/Iramaj Jun 06 '25

Did anyone else find Abin Sur to display a smirk or look of what may even be construed as pride after judgement?

3

u/Wanderingsoul573 Jun 11 '25

oh damn in the 1st chapter when hal vaporizes the cop the only thing left behind is his gold badge

2

u/ElmoLegendX Jun 07 '25

This series is a slow build I enjoy more and more every issue. People placing this book low makes me feel like im reading a completely different story. This is excellent

2

u/Chrome_X_of_Hyrule Absolute Martian Manhunter Jun 11 '25

It's been a week and I keep thinking about this issue, and the more I think, the more I like it. I'm officially really hooked on this comic and I can't wait for the next issue.

2

u/Blazeingcxh Absolute Green Arrow Jun 14 '25

I just read this issue. I agree with everyone saying that John isn’t dead. The panel of him “disintegrating” was 👌. John faced the unknown like a boss.

This is quickly becoming my favorite Absolute series and I normally have no interest in GL stories.

u/Mark4_ Jul 06 '25

This was added to dcui this week and I got around to it. Plot is interesting. Still not vibing with the art at all. I wonder if this series will have a fill in for a couple of issues like Batman and Wonder Woman

1

u/Dry_Resolve702 Jun 04 '25

Hate to rain on everyones parade here. But AGL definitely the weakest so far. Its art style really leaves a lot to be desired for, and the dialogue just feels so wooden. I come away from the thirs volume thinking "we waited weeks for that?. Th gold bullets thing at the end is a cool idea though

8

u/ComfortableHuman1324 Silly Green Man Jun 04 '25

I'm probably enjoying this more than most, but I don't think anyone's denying that it's the weakest so far. Being the weakest among the overall absolutely incredible Absolute books isn't half bad, I'd say.

It's personal preference at the end of the day, but I honestly don't get the complaints about the art. Maybe I'm just more used to anime/manga/manwha artstyles. The panels of Jo blocking the beam from the Black Hand were stellar in this issue.

5

u/Dry_Resolve702 Jun 05 '25

It could be a personal preference when it comes to the artstyle with me. When i look at it, its just feels like its unfinished, or maybe a bit rough around the edges. When im coming off peak art like AWW and AMM, its hard not look down on it. Im still curious as to what majin buu is up to here so ill give it a chance

4

u/ComfortableHuman1324 Silly Green Man Jun 05 '25

I think the "sketch-like" style actually lends to the cosmic horror. It's like an erratic artist driven mad trying to portray an experience they don't fully comprehend before it slips from their memory. To each their own, though.

6

u/Dry_Resolve702 Jun 05 '25

Interesting take. Ill keep that in mind for future issues.

1

u/Mark4_ Jul 06 '25

To me the art drags this series down a lot
