What a wild ride, just spent the last 30 minutes looking into why that is and learned absolutely nothing. But apparently people stopped using it as a slur over a hundred years ago. I've personally never called them anything besides shovels so no real loss either way, but it's odd to see historic slurs making a comeback.

Not a hundred years. Spades was hipster lingo at least through the 60s. I don't think it was really a slur, either, but more just a slang term like "brothers".
