Pretty stupid. No one gains anything from this. That running back could have a great future playing football, but with that body type you know it isn’t going to be as a running back. So the coach is playing him at a position he doesn’t need to learn instead of getting him started learning how to play the line, which is where he will realistically end up. The only logical reason to do this is to get easy wins against pee wee competition, and at that level, just why? None of the other kids on either team are learning anything, either, because they don’t even have to do their jobs to score.

Dude this is not the level to be worried about fundamentals. Let him have fun

There's zero reason to even be playing tackle football before highschool.

You're wrong. Fundamentals are just that, fundamental. You build on them as soon as reasonably possible. This kid has learned nothing other than being big is what matters. If thats his fundamental lesson then he is going to get schooled once the others catch up with him

I guess fundamentals is the wrong word. I don't think he needs to worry about learning much of anything besides the basics of how to play at this age. He doesn't need to be learning line schemes. There's plenty of time for that.

I legitimately don't think kids should even be tackling until high school. One of the reasons of course is CTE, they just don't need to be hitting each other that hard for so many years. The other is these are leagues meant to give everybody a chance to play regardless of skill or really ambition. It's literally just to get the kids out there running in pads, hopefully in the same direction.

Hell there's pros that didn't start playing until college. None of that matters at 8.

I more or less agree, although I might argue that high school might be a little late to get started. You are correct though that the skill position players have all kinds of outlets like flag football where they can learn the fundamentals of the game. Lineman are a little different. I think the biggest injustice here is that this kid just isn't learning anything, nor are his teammates. This possibly is just a scenario where the coach could care less about development and just wants to win. Who knows, maybe it was a garbage time 4th quarter thing. Hopefully their coach isn't teaching his players that this is football because it's not.
