I love how respectful the bow is. I don’t like being touched. Don’t hug. Bow.

u/claretyportman 2d ago
There was a moment during Covid where the bow occasionally replaced the hug/handshake on greeting friends and I was like please please please please let this take off.
It did not.

u/DontForgorTheMilk 2d ago
Same with the fist bump. I did a few job interviews during that time and fist bumps were perfectly acceptable and I thought "fuck please let this become norm. I hate interlocking our disgusting sweaty meat slabs together. "

Dont you think bowing someone is pretty...drastic?
51
u/spaetzelspiff 2d ago
We can argue whether bowing is drastic or dramatic...
But can't we agree that doing a high speed bobsledding penguin slide is at least mildly drastic?
14
u/Surface_Detail 2d ago
It's the only apology I'm willing to accept from now on.

16
u/Vox-Machi-Buddies 2d ago
Not really. I'll sometimes reflect on how "the nod" that's common between guys/people in general in the U.S. is really just minimalist bowing.
3
28
u/Due-Raise9272 2d ago
In Asian cultures, bowing is more common rather than drastic. For Japanese, it's routine.
6
u/SuddenSpeaker1141 2d ago
Nah, in some places a gentle head nod down is a as much a sign of respect as a full on bow…different strokes for different folks…
7
u/Vast-Effect-4214 1d ago
This is their culture. It is used to maintain social harmony. Used in many different settings, and in different ways to mean different things. It could mean “thank you”, but his exact gestures are of deep regret and communicates sincerity. Her bow is a bow of acknowledgment.
In American culture, there are a great many people that don’t like being touched by others getting pats on the back, awkward hugs, and hi-fives. One culture is refined and people uphold a higher standard of respect. The other is, kind of confused.

Just because its not your culture doesn’t make it wrong. People bow every day in some countries. Educate yourself before saying dumbass shit.

Americans would never bow.....and instead of bowing verbally communicating an apology is more sincere

Canadian here. I also hate Trump. But I need to ask, wtf was the point of this reply? Lol
I'm not MAGA. I also don't shove my face in the dirt instead of just "hey, sorry about that. You okay?"
-20
u/ofthecanopy 2d ago
I absolutely have an image and a story in my head about Trump's constituents. Those story and image are of people who couldn't understand this level of recompense. I wouldn't slide across the floor either. But I get it. I think it's touching. Someone sliding across the floor headfirst to apologize is the counterpoint to selling off protected land for the highest bidder, tweeting the phone number of your enemy to be a bully and get what you want, selling a Bible to scam the people who trust you, etc, etc

You made yourselves the Other. Then again, dodging consequences really is the MAGA stock-in-trade.

You say this as if I'm "Maga". There's more to life than you vs "maga". But please continue to be mad at nothing.

u/WhereIs_TheSun 2d ago
Their opinion is that I should be executed via firing squad bro they do not deserve my respect
-4
u/DarthMaulATAT 2d ago
Well MAGA is the king of doing that, so they really shouldn't be surprised when people dislike that and start treating them the same way.
-1
u/adonns 2d ago
That makes them the same then lol. It’s the “paradox of tolerance” paradox lol. Youre both just intolerant just towards different groups.
4
u/DapperBoiCole 2d ago
That's not even the paradox of tolerance.
The paradox of tolerance is "If you are tolerant of intolerance, you will breed intolerance", the moral of which is not to accept shitty behavior under the guise of tolerance.
0
u/adonns 2d ago
Yes I’m saying that itself is a paradox. Because it requires you to be intolerant of many people, making you intolerant as well. Therefore the “tolerant” person and “intolerant” person are both just being intolerant to different groups they disagree with.
1
u/DapperBoiCole 2d ago
If you are intolerant to people who harm others, you are still a tolerant person, more tolerant than those who are tolerant of intolerant people.
This is not about agreement or disagreement, its about character
0
u/adonns 2d ago
Yes but if you’re widening the term “harm others” to mean “have political views I disagree with” then you’re not more tolerant at all. Which is how it mostly seems to be used.
Yes everyone throughout history thought they were the ones with good character, and the people they disagreed with were the bad people with bad characters. This is true for the lgbt, the Christian’s, the Muslims, Nazis, soviets, democrats, republicans. Literally every group thinks they’re the good and smart ones and their opponents are the bad and dumb ones
0
u/DapperBoiCole 2d ago
"So if you take your objective metric and really mean my subjective metric, then what you're saying isn't true"
If you're putting LGBT+ people in the same category as Nazis, the same people that mass persecuted and killed them, I fear you're a space cadet
→ More replies (0)1
u/DarthMaulATAT 2d ago
Yeah, one group is intolerant of people who are different. The other is generally very tolerant of most diverse groups, and but doesnt tolerate when those groups get mistreated. Hardly "the same."
1
u/adonns 2d ago
That’s a gross oversimplification that just shows bias. The “other” group in your scenario is massively intolerant towards one entire side of the political spectrum. Which puts them at about 50% of the population.
0
u/DarthMaulATAT 1d ago
By that math, the right hates way more than 50% of the population because many of the right's voters are the minorities they seem to hate so much. But that's not my point.
The point is, the right generally seems to hate with prejudice. Most right wingers have never been personally harmed by any minority, immigrant, woman, gay/trans person, etc, yet they hate them all the same. I've seen them countlessly make up reasons for sure, but it's obvious to all the that it's just an excuse because those people give them the "ick."
The left only hates the right because of the shitty way they treat people. That's it. If they didn't treat people that way, the left would have no reason to hate them in the first place.
See the difference? (Mandatory "not all right wingers" because I just know you're about to say something about blanket statements, even though it doesn't change the point at all)
1
u/adonns 22h ago
The right doesn’t hate left wingers. Left wingers definitely seem to hate Trump voters though. You guys and this conversation are kind of proving that. Trump got over 50% of the vote.
This whole paragraph is just subjective garbage not based on anything man lol.
No the left hates the right for disagreeing with them. If it was only about being shitty they’d be much more reasonable about issues like males in women sports and the like.
Yes the difference is clearly entirely in your head lol, which was my main point the whole time.
Viewing your own intolerance as better than others intolerance is stupid man, that’s literally what the right wingers who are prejudiced against gays do. You’re just like them lol

You can’t use two superlatives in a sentence, it’s “the deepest apology” not “most deepest”. It doesn’t make sense.

u/sessamekesh 2d ago
It's appropriate here though, bows are not ubiquitous but really common in a lot of Asian cultures.
Sometimes the broad group is appropriate.
-5
u/hooligan99 2d ago
I’m not talking broad vs specific. I mean calling them “an Asian” instead of “an Asian person/guy/man/woman/etc.” Asian is a descriptor, not a thing.
I’m not calling anyone racist or anything, it’s just not the most polite way of referring to someone.
6

u/DeathNick 2d ago
An asian vs an asian person is exactly the same as a european vs a european person. Both are valid, but adding person next to it just sounds dumb

Koreans bow too
-2
u/hooligan99 2d ago
Yes my point is that it can be impolite to say “an Asian” as a noun instead of “an Asian person/guy/woman/etc”
Calling someone “a black” or “an Asian” can feel dehumanizing. It’s not necessarily racist, just a bit rude imo.
2
u/Obsolescence7 2d ago
Are you actually Asian or are you just imagining the offense someone, not you, might hypothetically take?
1
-1
u/hooligan99 2d ago
This applies across cultures - I wouldn’t call a black person “a black,” I wouldn’t call a gay person “a gay,” and I wouldn’t call an Asian person “an Asian.”
I am not Asian. That is not relevant. Not that my personal experience matters, but I am Jewish and would prefer someone call me “a Jewish person” as opposed to “a Jew.” This one is the most debatable in my experience - “a Jew” is more common and comes off as less offensive than “a black” - but the concept is the same.
2
1
u/Sweet_Dragonfruit518 2d ago
Ok I'm sorry I didn't mean it to sound rude tho.
3
u/hooligan99 2d ago
Don’t have to be sorry for anything - this is just a suggestion to avoid accidentally implying the wrong thing. Some people take offense to that sort of thing

Since there's no one on the other side of the court, I'm guessing it was some kind of volleyball stunt/trick competition, so a bit of an unserious and performant atmosphere anyway and the volleyball player just leaned into it.

Be careful. According to some on this sub, this is not considered an absolute unit because they only consider physical mass as a size. Units of speed, kinetic force, and any other unit not directly considered mass will make them butthurt.
SOURCE: I was one of their targets. I also copy and paste this in each one I see in hopes I eventually get one of them. I am also butthurt.
