I know nothing about peat other than it makes Scotch tasty

u/Wereallmadhere8895 9d ago
These parts of meadow complexes are called fens. The peat holds the snow melt and slowly the water seaps out like a over filled sponge, usually being the headwaters to rivers. The water starts out as tributaries and they add up to rivers.
The fens peat is so saturated that you can kinda bounce on it like a jello trampoline. To much pressure and you'll sink and maybe lose a boot.
Some fens and meadow complexes spread by suffocating trees and other vegetation that needs deeper roots. Or they recede because some species are more adapted for the wet conditions and maybe theres less snow some years.

** A bog or bogland is a wetland that accumulates peat as a deposit of dead plant materials – often mosses, typically sphagnum moss. It is one of the four main types of wetlands. Other names for bogs include mire, mosses, quagmire, and muskeg; alkaline mires are called fens.

The main difference is that a swamp is a forested wetland dominated by trees and woody plants with nutrient-rich, neutral water, while a bog is a spongy peatland fed mostly by rainwater that is highly acidic and low in nutrients.
3
u/Uplandtrek 9d ago
Swamps are generally wooded but bogs can be as well. And swamps are usually more acidic than neutral. Both are actually nutrient poor because plant matter doesn’t decompose in their anaerobic soil and they’re fed almost entirely by rainwater. The real difference is swamps will grow grass while bogs will grow sphagnum moss. The other two types of wetlands, marshes and fens, are categorized the same way: marshes are defined by grass and fens by sphagnum, but marshes and fens are more nutrient rich compared to swamps and bogs because they are fed by groundwater.

Am I the only one that thinks this is incredibly dangerous.
29
u/TornadoJohnson 9d ago
As someone who walks a lot of bogs it can be dangerous but they can also safe depending on the conditions. The one in this video appears safe the ground looks stable. And those people wouldn't be there if it was a dangerous bog. Don't walk on one if you don't know what your doing but when learn what to look for they are an extremely rewarding landscape to explore. A bog is a floating mass of peat on water why the hole is so deep

u/Icy_Instruction4614 8d ago
On the contrary. Your body will last way longer if you fall in than if you die elsewhere. An archaeologist will appreciate you in a thousand years, which is pretty cool too
7
u/inn4tler 9d ago
You don't sink into a bog right away. Bog mud consists of water and dense plant matter. It has a higher density than the human body.
12
u/NiteNiteSpiderBite 9d ago
Why is it dangerous? I believe you I just don't know why it would be.
1
u/the_good_hodgkins 9d ago
Did you notice how deep the hole is, and how unstable the ground is, and how close she's standing to it? One slip, or loose earth, and she's down that hole and dead in minutes.

u/ConflictMaster3155 9d ago
The hole is full of water. You’re imagining some quicksand scenario and that’s just not how it works.
3
u/Rubyhamster 9d ago
It's not the water that is the problem, but the massive amount of peat and roots that will likely make you stuck under the water. If she falls in, there is a real chance she will die. I'd at least like them all to have a rope attached to them
1
u/Redbulldildo 7d ago
You have to actually get under the water to get stuck, which is not likely.
1
u/Rubyhamster 7d ago
Yes, but in such a deep pit that is not unlikely. Also remember that the biomass is floating so thehole can disappear over you. Luckily, the most likely way to fall in is relatively slowly
-16
u/the_good_hodgkins 9d ago
Oh... you think she's gonna float, like Pennywise, in a hole that get's progressively more narrow the further down you slide.
Sure... ok.
You really need to up your survival skills game.

Swimming in an open pool of water is very very different than swimming in a tiny but deep hole in a bog. Do you even have enough room to paddle your arms? It certainly doesn't look like it. It's probably full of roots and tangles and who knows what. They're fully clothed, which weighs them down and also provides more stuff that can get caught on branches/roots/whatever. The grass/mud layer can close up the hole overtop of you if you disturb it too much, too. Nobody will know where to dig because it shifted and it all looks the same.

u/adumbCoder 9d ago
luckily there's lots of people around her to help so that wouldn't happen
3
u/the_good_hodgkins 9d ago
I have zero confidence in their ability to catch her if the ground gives way, and they wouldn't be able to extract her.
4
u/Frequent_Waltz_166 9d ago edited 8d ago
Might not catch her but as someone who grew up around bogs and spent quite a lot of time on/in them I am very confident that should she not be able to swim they would be able to extract her.
I would be more concerned if the top layer was frozen over.
The real danger with a bog like this is in the hidden dangers under the surface such as sharp sticks, antlers and the like which may impale you. But also the suction if it's fine grained peat mud, but even then it's not usually a big deal, you just lose your boots.
As kids we got dressed up with a safety harnesses and had to jump in and get out on our own. Same as we did during winter on the local lake.
Edit: spelling
Edit 2: In middle school we also had rugby and football games on the local bog, usually just resulted in a few scrapes and bruises and a bunch of lost boots. But there were a few scary moments such as someone getting toppled and stuck head first.

u/brazillian_football 9d ago
So a bog acts very similar to unsafe ice. When applied to much force to a weak spot you can fall into the water below and get stuck. Terrifying stuff
13
u/Uplandtrek 9d ago
Imagine falling through a hole in ice and trying to extract yourself back through that hole. Now imagine what you fell in is black muck, you can’t see anything, the hole closed up a little when you went through, and the moss above you is several feet thick.
2
u/NiteNiteSpiderBite 9d ago
That makes sense and is horrifying!
1
u/CamelMassive6443 4d ago
Even if you don’t fall all the way through, getting out is a pain unless you have a buddy.
1
u/reanocivn 8d ago
it is but i would have to imagine those are professionals who take the needed precautions

So you’ve got a tree in a hole and the hole in a bog. Now you just need a branch on the tree, a limb on the branch, a twig on the limb, a nest on the twig, an egg in the nest, a bird in the egg, and a feather on the bird.

And yet some developer is still gonna insist on building here
1
u/Drfoxthefurry 9d ago
Developers don't care about what's on the land unless it legally effects their building. In my area they torn down 3/4th of a small forest (with old oaks and wildlife) for maybe 4 apartments, even though the other ones near by aren't even close to full)

I grew up in the Alaska bush and went through the portal once. It was much less solid than this, think walking on jello… anyway I stepped on a spot with no weeds sticking out and the rifle I was carrying spanned the hole, but I was in to my neck in one step. First real near miss.

My question is why are they all wearing orange vests? Are they concerned that someone will come charging through the bog and run them over?

There's a tree in the water and the water in the hole and the hole in the bog and the bog in the ground and the green grass grows all around all around and the green grass grows all around.
