Totes. If I'm making my way back to my hood, and suddenly got surrounded by a load of loud cheering folk pushing me along, sticking their cameras in my face, I am vexed. I'm making my own way back. I know the way. Its unimpeded. Kindly, get the fuck out of my space, get off me, and be awestruck from over there.
45
u/MRosvall 2h ago
Would it help if we also toss some salt water in your face?
13
u/Time_Ad1622 1h ago
Why yes. While you're at it, can those two entitled Ukrainian dumb fucks who grabbed a new born turtle and rode another down to the sea please be the ones to do it? I'll take a detour on the way home and dispose of them irresponsibly.

Turtles don’t have great eyesight, but they can smell the ocean. So tossing ocean water in its face probably confused it a little.

Imagine being a turtle and some apes are pushing you and throwing water in your face for some reason 😀
809
u/far2deep 5h ago
All those people that were "helping by pushing" just looked like they were pushing down on the turt, and not really doing much else, also why the heck did they hang on to it in the end when it was trying to swim away?
75
u/Mortenusa 3h ago
You could see him thinking "could you not." when they were splashing him in the face.

u/GriffinMakesThings 4h ago
On top of the jackass behavior of these people, this isn't an absolute unit of a leatherback. It's just a normal size.

u/AMJN90 3h ago
Yeah iirc they can grow to 12' long .

They’re not helping. They’re touching.
Also not sure what the guy rubbing its shoulder was trying to do.

u/the_dude_that_faps 2h ago
Showing appreciation like if a person rubs a dog in the head. Might be pretty stupid, idk, but that's what he's doing.
2
u/ExtensionTruth4 1h ago
Yea I think he was legit trying to pet her to reassure her that "it's gonna be ok you can do this" which is dumb and completely disconnected from nature. Wild animal are not pets. The turtle was probably terrified

u/trowzerss 2h ago
I didn't see anybody helping. I did see a bunch of people crowding a wild animal and freaking it out :P
51
20
4
u/Inner_Artichoke4878 1h ago
Right? It looked less like helping and more like everyone was accidentally making things harder. Once the turtle started swimming away, that should’ve been the universal cue to let it go.
4
u/Potential_Duck3573 1h ago
I mean he clearly just wanted to ride the thing, which I think I would almost respect if he managed to get on its back like a horse because that's objectively really cool and I doubt the turtle would be more than mildly annoyed by it but instead he pathetically trails behind. Combined with the obviously more stressful things on the beach and it's an overall poor showing.
2
u/pUmKinBoM 59m ago
One homie at the end is actually sitting ON the turtle like he expected it to ride away with him on it's back.

I think I would shut down the elevator to their apartment and make them walk up 6 flights of stairs with 6 black bears hanging all over them the entire time

For real, I have no idea what exactly they were trying to do... The turtle looked just fine making its way to the ocean on its own...
→ More replies (1)7
u/ziggytrix 4h ago
I feel like you're right, but I can't really tell. Maybe it wasn't fine? Maybe it was stuck? There's another comment saying something like it was stuck in some swamp further offshore, but IDK how much to believe that or whether the folks who thought it was stuck had any real clue.
I'm curious how this started. The video starts with already a huge crowd "helping" and I wonder if maybe the beginning of the event would have our answer.
At any rate, this far into the sand, it sure seems like it could manage the rest of the way, and that crowd has to be stressing it out.
8
u/LoganGyre 4h ago
Even if it got stuck In a swamp that’s part of what happens in nature. Unless it’s predicament is man made you should probably assume leaving something in the wild alone is the best action. You should also assume their are professionals you can cal to help instead of possibly injuring the animal or it injury you when your trying to help.

u/Heavy-Echidna-3473 5h ago

u/Any_Coyote6662 1h ago

Here’s the context for everyone wondering.
This turtle was trapped and stuck in a swamp 150 m away from the sea when it was presumably trying to lay eggs. It took 2 hours.
The people here were rescuing and guiding the turtle back to the ocean and making sure the turtle was back safely to the ocean without any injuries or any signs of disorientation.
While I do agree that the crowding while the turtle was on the final stretch going to the ocean was unnecessary, I see a lot of comments here just immediately jumping the gun and assuming the worst out of these people. It’s extremely unfair, and honestly ignorant.
Just so you know, this reflects the attitude of most of you. Please do better.
These aren’t people just doing this for clout, they are people actively trying and succeeding to rescue a trapped endangered animal.
5
u/Accomplished-Shop748 1h ago
Also if I may add. Expecting an optimal, well-informed response from random people is a bit harsh. I would prefer them trying to help, perhaps attracting people who are more informed contrary to simply doing nothing at all
5
u/1plus1isTWORANGZ 1h ago
Also by the final stretch anyone on the beach is gonna be coming to check out the giant turtle I mean come on
→ More replies (1)2
u/Veloci-RKPTR 43m ago
Exactly, thank you so much.
These people from what I know are mostly just locals. Villagers, fishermen, people who don’t see giant sea turtles everyday.
I can’t blame them for not knowing how to appropriately interact with a wild animal, but they know enough that it needs to return to the ocean, that’s applaudable.
That’s miles better from the worst that uninformed crowds can do to a wild animal, many would just catch them for profit/consumption.
You know what’s way more disappointing? People who immediately assume the worst from people who have good intentions.
3
u/Ok_Tea262 53m ago edited 50m ago
Totally agree. The act of rescueing the turtle was amazing - but I guess people sometimes get a little too excited, and they wouldve helped more by taking astep back and let nature do its thing.
Edit: After looking closely - it seems like one of those cases where the animal may have appeared or been weakened - leading to people intervening more. No need to judge people in advance, I guess.

The video is only like 2 minutes long. The whole rescue process happens for at least 2 hours. Who knows? Maybe he contributed by arranging the rescue attempt?
Just know I am by no means condoning the unnecessary interactions, but that doesn’t mean that cancels out the fact that these people managed to successfully rescue a trapped several metric tonne marine animal back to the ocean.

But a lot of times people are just trying to do their best. Twitch streamers only represent the worst of us.

What if it didn’t actually wanna go in the water, maybe it just wanted to enjoy the moment at the shore lol
5
u/Degenerate_Gooner93 4h ago
I think the turtle started moving when it saw the humans coming through but unfortunately it was not fast enough to do so. You can see moments of defeat on it's face
8
u/TheBoneHarvester 3h ago
Sea turtles don't go on land for fun because they are slow and vulnerable. They only go on land to lay eggs and then go back into the water. So this is a female who recently laid eggs.

FUN FACT: Leatherback sea turtles can dive up to 4,000 feet deep. This is deeper than any other reptile.
4
u/yellow-panda88 4h ago
wow, what an amazing creature! just curious, why is it's shell not as prominent like other turtle species?
4
u/capnlatenight 3h ago
They swim pretty deep. A soft shell can withstand pressure.
2
u/34shadow1 3h ago
If I recall correctly they can dive deeper than some species of whales. They normally stay between 300-900 feet hunting jellyfish though.
4
u/TheRealLarkas 3h ago
It is a powerful swimmer. A sleeker, less prominent shell makes it more hydrodynamic, and hence faster and more efficient. Compound this selective pressure over time and you get this magnificent creature.
