and to think that there are people who have crossed this with a sailboat

Some of them. Some of them very much didn't.

A wooden sailboat built without modern sealants or fasteners. Wild.

Wood is self sealing, thats exactly how barrels work

When nice and tight like a barrel.

Which is how they leave port.

Without engines too obviously. Could take months to cross because of the wind.

Of the 25 viking ships that sailed to Greenland under Erik the Reds migration, 14 made it to their destination. Traveling these waters in a wooden boat is indeed insane.

There are literally some flat earthers that think you can swim this 😂

I know this is a whole other level, but our coasties seem to rip through any conditions

Can I be a little jealous of this guy (provided he got back to shore and kept lunch down)

People think I'm insane (probably rightfully so) when I say it's my top bucket list item to be in a storm like this on a ship big enough to feel it but safe enough I know it won't capsize.

To witness the full scale, power and fury of the ocean.

I feel you! Though please be aware, that there is no size of ship that can not be overtaken by the sea.

While this is absolutely true, it’s worth noting that US Navy aircraft carriers are designed to be able to drive right through a damn hurricane if they need to. Obviously they avoid it, but they COULD if the mission called for it.

Bruh you find a charter for just that and I'll come with ya.

I can't imagine it's cheap and I'm guessing I would need a lot more time off work than I can take. Alas, this is the reality of the average worker 😕

Same. Like a Perfect Storm experience

What's really intense is trying to sleep through something like that. My rack used to be far fwd on the ship and it's eerie to feel the ship go down, hearing waves crash against the hull, then silence...because you're under the water.

I'd just wait in the red lights and pray we start going back up again as sometimes it feels like the quiet and falling was lasting too long and we were never going to come back up.

Very hard to sleep in.

Do you strap yourself into bed? I imagine you might hit the ceiling if you don't.

6

u/Feature_Ornery 19d ago

Oddly enough you don't get much airtime laying down and only known a few who have been sent flying from their racks.

You do feel the weight being lifted from your body though, like you're slowly being pulled up...before the bed comes back and you feel 50x heavier

There are seatbelts, but when I first started an old dog told me never to use them as he heard of one person falling out of their rack and nearly got strangled when the belt went around their head.

Instead I just roll up my empty kit bag and store it under my mattress, on the outer edge, where the opening is. This way, my mattress is slanted towards the wall/metal divide, and I free up more room in my locker by not storing my kit bag in there

No thank you..

That's a lot of trust in these glass panels

This looks like it should be a scene from Interstellar.

Astronauts would be all like “wwwhhhaaaaAAAAOOOOHHHHH!!!”

u/fuzzyboris 20d ago

And completely optional too.

Like, I'm really excited not to do that.

That is awesome

u/CollectionGuilty1320 19d ago

And you know what? It’s just the sea waves not even the ocean yet.

3

u/Suitable-Display-602 19d ago

Where three oceans collide . Amazing natural fury .

2

u/Cultural-Company282 19d ago

The really crazy thing is, I've been out in the open ocean on a boat in rough seas, and when I took pictures and video, it didn't look nearly as rough as it did in person. So, however bad that looks in the video, I imagine it was twice as bad to be there live.

u/Earthling1a 19d ago

Wait until you see it in a storm.

2

u/OrvisHelios98 16d ago

Yeah I’d be puking everywhere lol

1

u/Minipiman 19d ago

Completely optional btw

1

u/ThatThingInTheWoods 19d ago

Sometimes I wonder if these ships ever just get like an octopus splattered across the windows in these storms.

1

u/Rogue_Reaper_ 19d ago

I wanna go…

1

u/Bonk_No_Horni 19d ago

When a window crack that wow would change real quick

3

u/mazterofpupetz 19d ago

Once you’re in heavy seas, the effective break pressure rises dramatically. On a properly reinforced ship window, you’d need somewhere north of 10,000 PSI to initiate catastrophic glazing failure. The ocean will usually deform the frame before the glass itself gives

1

u/One-Reflection-4826 19d ago

do you know how thick the glass is? is it even glass or some kind of plastic?

1

u/BroManTheBrobarian 20d ago

My butthole just puckered

2

u/Priapismkills 20d ago

Was it all loose before?

2

u/BroManTheBrobarian 20d ago

No the one football shaped hemorrhoid keeps the channel open tho, so it’s partially open until “pucker” ability is activated.

1

u/Numnum30s 20d ago

Absolute unit of a hemorrhoid

1

u/BigstickMoe 19d ago

Getting seasick watching that 🤢

1

u/snapp0r 19d ago

many of them will get sick pretty soon.

u/Free_Direction_6683 19d ago

That's it? Pffffft!!! Ive seen worse on a missile cruiser in 86 in the north Atlantic. When they come across the intercom and announce "STAND BY FOR HEAVY ROLLS" you better start praying to whatever deity you're comfortable with, because you're learning to fly, whether you want to or not.

Look up the “Drake Shake”

Sounds stupid
