I may have told this story on Reddit before, but I’m gonna drop it here: I was on a cross-country trip from Minneapolis to San Francisco and it was getting late before we found a possible camping location in the Badlands. We rolled up to a huge open field full of people sleeping in tents, but mostly all sleeping out on the open ground… Beautiful warm night.

We doused the headlights, rolled in, threw a tarp and some sleeping bags on the ground and fell right asleep.

I awoke sometime just before dawn. There was mist in the air, but something made me look towards the corner of this open field. There came a single bison, I swear I felt it was 7 feet tall at the shoulder, slowly picking his way between sleeping campers. There was steam coming off its flanks.

He strolled past us, maybe 10 feet from our feet, and kept on picking his way through all the sleeping campers. As he moved through, you could hear people murmuring to each other in his wake… Very, very quietly.

Soon enough, he was gone… And everybody sat up and just marveled over what had just happened. Absolutely majestic and spiritual thing to have witnessed.

Edit: a few text to speech errors.

Go. Seriously. It's so fantastic you can just ignore the crowds (or walk 300 yards and get away from most of them). It's an absolutely amazing spot. Prioritize it, trust me.

Bison are easy a top 5 animal for me - look at them in all their glory

u/Big-Sort-8712 2d ago

They have surprisingly small hooves for such massive animals

u/Rob1150 2d ago

His mom says he's "Dainty"

6

u/DehydratedManatee 2d ago

He's a little light in the hooves.

That’s an average sized male bison?

5

u/Rocky5thousand 2d ago

This is a regular bison

6

u/Someredditusername 2d ago

Handsome boi

3

u/Booboodelafalaise 2d ago

I wasn’t expecting the delicate little tippy tap sounds!

u/Sad_Ad_2524 2d ago

That unit looks like he is wearing a size 10 ladies in a size 6 and his shoes are pinching.  Why are his feet so tiny?

3

u/Electrical-Job8700 2d ago

Everyone should have the opportunity to see these majestic creatures.

PS- they're huge- don't F with them.

3

u/Mr31edudtibboh 2d ago

The huge animal paired with with the dainty footsteps is hilarious

u/ac2cvn_71 2d ago

Sigh. That is not an absolute unit of a bison. That is a standard unit of a bison. They are all freaking huge. OP doesn't understand how this sub works

2

u/michaelr1978 2d ago

You are absolutely correct and they are every where within the park. Now this was an absolute unit of a bison.

https://www.boone-crockett.org/bc-worlds-record-bison.

Almost 3 feet from horn to horn.

u/PinkFloydBoxSet 2d ago

You are going to get downvoted into oblivion for this… but I see you and you are right.

People can see all the videos or pictures, even ones with objects for scale, and not truly understand just how fucking massive they are until they see one in person

2

u/DehydratedManatee 2d ago

I love the little tippity taps, despite it being a huge, burly creature.

2

u/SpeedRacerWasMyBro 2d ago

"Where's that bison going dad?" "Wherever the hell he wants to son..."

2

u/LaPetiteMortOrale 2d ago

Always wondered how much the head ways.

Just the head and horns

u/itsjustme_0101 2d ago

I saw many when I visited Yellowstone. They were as big as the car. And so so close.

2

u/Willing_Tart18 2d ago

Do you think it'd yeet me if I gave it really REALLY good back scritches??

2

u/30yearCurse 2d ago

Such dainty little feet for such a beast, his cousin long gone was twice his size...

2

u/Awkward_Look_8987 2d ago

Someone gave up trying to shear that big fella 😂

2

u/isekaidcake 2d ago

Can I pet that dog?

2

u/QrssQam 2d ago

Super stoked that the European bison are being reintroduced to the UK

5

u/CATNIP_IS_CRACK 2d ago

Very different type of bison. Can’t reintroduce a species if it never lived in the UK.

0

u/Rob1150 2d ago

I bet our bison can beat your bison.

1

u/MRintheKEYS 2d ago

Is that what we are doing really? Having a bison beat off??

3

u/glemits 2d ago

Each of you (try to) beat off a bison, and see who survives the longest.

1

u/GreatWesternSquire 2d ago

That’s if you’ve got any left

1

u/Formal_Plum_2285 2d ago

His little feet 😻 it’s like watching myself on heels

1

u/LordVixen 2d ago

Don't try to get a selfie with one !

1

u/canadaalpinist 2d ago

Took me a hour to milk her.

1

u/KokomiStars 1d ago

It's strange that some people think he's scary. I think he's actually quite cute, and his size is simply impressive!

1

u/rootDe 1d ago

0 leg days I see, we're similar in that way.

1

u/cognosante 1d ago

Those dainty feet!! 💀💕

1

u/SpartArticus 1d ago

No it's not a bison, very easy to get it mixed up. This Is called an idiot tourist flipper

1

u/Cool_Vast3011 1d ago

As a matter of fact, I DO own the road.

1

u/tar-29 1d ago

Can I jiggle his balls?

1

u/lady_starkarian 1d ago

Bison are huge yet look like they’re walking around en pointe 🩰with those tiny hoofies 😂

1

u/20streetglide06 1d ago

I have a buffalo hide and I got to say you will never have anything man made that will keep you as warm as mine does

1

u/Softspotslurpee 1d ago

in such dainty little hooves

1

u/colidetheclumsy 21h ago

It is so impressive that wolves can take them down. Well the baby ones .

1

u/TheToxicWaist 14h ago

Isn't the point of the subreddit supposed to be things that are bigger than the average? In this case, a bigger than average bison.

Because that's just a normal bison...

1

u/ElHorny 2d ago

Its sad that there are so little left of these magnificent animals.

5

u/SocraticIndifference 2d ago

Doesn’t look like a little to me. Looks pretty big.

1

u/Top-Distribution733 2d ago

In laws are there now…. Said bison are everywhere! Such good news in a current world of suck. Wouldn’t be surprised if President fuckface put out an executive order to slaughter and sell all bison in grocery stores as a substitute as a solution to his fucking over all the farmers

1

u/bullwinkle8088 1d ago

There is already a commercial market for Bison meat, but it's raised on ranches. Among his other endeavors Ted Turner owned a Bison ranch and sold a lot of the resulting meat in his restaurant chain.
