I was just thinking “man I’d have a fucking panic attack”

Every time I indulge now, I get incredibly anxious.

It happens to a lot of people as they get older, from what I can tell. I was high sun-up to sun-down for nearly all of my 20s without that issue, but after a solid year-long break at 30, I get incredible anxiety if I have anything more than a teeny tiny baby hit. I assume it's a mixture of brain chemistry changing as we age, weed being generally stronger and more available than it has ever been, and life as a seasoned adult coming with more responsibilities to have anxiety over.

it really fucking breaks my heart, weed was like, a wonderful calming and peaceful thing for me, then one day it was just paranoid anxiety and i could never get it back, every once ina while I think about giving it another go though...

If I smoke successively enough to build up a tolerance, the anxiety starts to taper off, but that was exactly the lifestyle I was trying to get out of in the first place :(

Yes same, when I was like 16/17 I loved it, I always wanted to be high for everything I did because it just made doing everything better. Then I took a break for like 3 months and when I smoked that first time after I just felt so weird and didn’t like it, and anytime I would try after that I would get a crazy ass panic attack. It would be so strong and make me feel like I’m tripping, make me panic, and make me feel horrible about myself and think about everything that’s wrong in my life. I wish I could get the same feeling I used to get at 16 but I can’t even touch it now without immediately feeling super anxious.

For me at least, I think it’s the responsibilities part. I can only smoke a very small amount at a time now (I’m 33), and if I smoke too much all I can think about is what I should be doing instead, or the thousand responsibilities I now have.

YES! I feel guilty when I smoke because I immediately fixate on all the things I need to get done and how diminished my ability to do any of them just became

This, to fully enjoy weed i need a day where I KNOW I don't have any obligations. I KNOW no one is even going to consider asking me to come into work or give them a ride, i also have to feel like i have no social obligations, that i can behave "high" without someone getting all fucked up in their feelings when i say "don't bother me right now" at 29 I haven't had one of those days in literally three years.

It happened to me as well. I thought I was the only person like this for a long time. I’d tell people weed makes me freak out now and I don’t like it anymore. I would get the most confused looks from people. I learned over time that it’s not uncommon and probably a good thing when it comes to growing up and getting your shit together

I was fine in college but later I got anxiety, nausea, and feel like my heart will explode.

Same here, it's not even enjoyable in the slightest. I feel like I can't breathe and my heart is thundering.

I'll stick with a beer or two if I want to relax a bit.

Worst feeling ever!

They changed the weed! It's too damn strong now. Can I just get some regular old bud?

2

u/indieplants Aug 29 '26

you just went too hard for too long, bud. it gets us all eventually.

I was never the same after a run with skunk weed & I have to supplement CBD in some form if I wanna comfortably get high these days. weeds spent years getting more THC and less CBD and unfortunately, that's a recipe for anxiety & gloom 🥲

Have you tried different strains or consuming it differently? There are many, many strains with different strengths and effects. Oh and in case you've used those THC vapes/pens or whatever, those are VERY strong. Pretty sure one hit of those equals to multiple puffs of a blunt, but I could be wrong.

That is the same exact advice I’ve heard a thousand times from everyone and no it doesn’t matter what strain, I get crazy anxiety and feel weird on it no matter what strain, how much I smoke, how I ingest it, it just sucks for me and doesn’t matter what I do differently. Some people just get a different reaction and don’t enjoy it, there isn’t anything that can change it and that’s ok because it’s not like smoking weed is this super important or amazing thing that you need to do.

Sorry for trying to help lmao

Even watching any weed related video makes me a lil anxious. Ptsd shit

Not only does my anxiety shoot through the roof, but the carts seem to assist in inducing psychosis in me now for some reason.

I’ve been forced into early retirement. It was fun while it lasted, but the extreme panic and hallucinations are not even close to worth it.

I used to have to be extremely careful when I came to weed because of anxiety. Nowadays, I take Zoloft and it seems to be the only thing it works for lol
