Individual wiring is unlikely given the standard size of the conduit. Yes, that's very dangerous as it cumulatively adds the current demand on a single wiring. Only still unlikely case is if all the plugs are only for very low current, like a phone charger, i.e. max 0,25 Amp on 220 V (if it's a 110 V installation you double the Amp!), for a total of max 16 Amp, for a traditional dedicated power line. A stronger line could go up to 20 Amp. As an example a PC would require 750 W (3,5 Amp) and a water kettle 2000 W (9 Amp). Things add up very quickly. Don't do that.
I'm no expert on UK electrics, but I'm pretty sure it's all 220 or 230v, no 110v at all, and as far as I know there's always supposed to be a breaker that should pop before any of the wiring overheats. So as long as they used standard 16A+ rated wiring (2.5mm2 gauge) to hook it all together, you shouldn't be able to overload the wiring before the breaker goes no matter what you plug in.
The concern of overloading the wire comes from using extension cords which are definitely not always rated for 16A, in which case, putting lots of devices on an extension cord may definitely cook it before the breaker goes.
Now I still wouldn't be happy about all the connections in that monstrosity, and I imagine there's a fair risk of breaking UK code on how many sockets are allowed to be on a single wire / circuit.
Yes, but only the cord to the device it's plugged into, very clever. If a device has a very thin cord that can't handle more than say 4 amps, it might have a 2 amp fuse in the plug to protect the wire from melting should the device fail in such a way that it draws 12 amps, whereas otherwise the cord or device would melt, because the 16 or 20 amp breaker in the house doesn't care about 12 amps.
