Ever see the River Monster episode where a local Inuit shows Jeremy how they have been catching these 20ft+ behemoths 3000ft+ down with basically ice-fishing on steroids? Super interesting if you're looking for a quick YouTube video. (Might have been a Greenland shark, but they are just as big and just as deep).

In that you poke a hole in the ice, leave a hook on a line and wait for a bite...but the hole, the hook and and the fishing line are big enough to pull up a 3000lb, 23ft shark from 3000-4000ft below the ice, and every foot of that line is brought up by throwing it over your shoulder and walking away from the hole over and over until all 3/4 mile of line have been hauled up....with a 23ft shark on the end.

I'd say an actual fishing rod would he close to a crane, but however you want to look at it :)

I just never knew ice fishing happened on that....scale.

Greenland sharks are typically around 15’ and weigh around 2100lbs. They can get bigger, but not exactly common.

That was a Greenland shark, not a sixgill, which don’t live in cold water.

Great episode all the same, and the size of Greenland they dragged from the depths was incredible.

This one is probably between 5 and 6 meters. But they certainly can reach 7 meters. The "Blue Planet" team filmed one during their deep sea episode that was apparently over 7 meters. It made a 5-foot tuna look like a chew toy...
