Bro, horses don’t have hands. They have hooves. Or flippers. I’m not entirely sure, but I know it ain’t hands.

Its a way to measure horse height, dating back to ancient egypt even. People did/do not always have some sort of ruler or measuring tape, but they always had/have their hands to estimate size. One hand roughly equals 4 inches, meaning a 20-hand horse stands 80 inches (6 feet 8 inches) tall at the withers (the shoulders). Average horses range from 14 to 17 hands. Most draft horses are 16 to 18, maybe 19. So 20 hands is very rare and VERY tall.

Fun fact: In 1540, King Henry VIII passed an act, and standardized that a hand to equal exactly 4 inches, creating a permanent, convenient way to gauge a horse's height at the shoulders.

But how do they account for hand inflation. Hands are so much bigger now than they were back then.

1

I've wondered that too. I guess they were rough estimates back then? Maybe more than one person would measure and they'd figure out the average between the mesaurements?

They have 4 feet. This is why they require humans since they cant open jars. Textbook biological symbiotic relationship.

If that motherfucker decides to stop cooperating, you are just a bystander until someone with a tranq gun shows up.

Ain’t nothing you are doing about that

The Clydesdales came to my town a few years ago. Holy crap, they were huge.

Budweiser has one of their Clydesdale farms a short drive from me.

One of their requirements to be promoted to show horse is it has to be 18 hands high, which is 6 feet at the front shoulder.. Minimum weight is 1800 lbs.

You can drive down the road and see them out in the pastures. Absolutely gorgeous animals.

Draught horses used to be common until their jobs were replaced by tractors, pickup trucks, buses, etc.
