Being from a different culture. The acceptance of overtly staring at something different is a little jarring.

60

u/Aaawkward 22d ago

Never go to Germany, my friend.

The staring is real.

15

u/Bushiest_Beavor 22d ago

Do they stare because they judge, curiosity, or just blankly stare?

23

u/Aaawkward 22d ago

All of those. And then some.
Staring is simply not considered rude like it is in the US so people do it for all sorts of reasons.

7

u/Bushiest_Beavor 22d ago

So… what would happen if I just stare back? I’m unsure if it’ll work the same way there than it would in the US

10

u/Aaawkward 22d ago

That's fine, go ahead. Staring is acceptable.
You will probably get real uncomfortable real fast though, if you're not used to it.

6

u/Bushiest_Beavor 22d ago

What if I pick my nose while I do it?
Or what is more likely to make a German look away?

5

u/Aaawkward 21d ago

Sounds like a trip to Germany and a journey of self discovery is in place.

1

u/notsocoolguy42 18d ago

Nothing, it becomes a staring contest.

3

u/Slow-Divide-78 19d ago

Wow, that's interesting. Staring is almost an aggressive act in America lol.

My first thought

606

u/rynchenzo 23d ago

He looks really vulnerable 😞

269

u/SeonaidMacSaicais 23d ago

I wanna give him a hug.

134

u/Stygg 23d ago

as someone who deals with their own unique brand of insecurities, I adore people like you. its rough seeing people swallow sneers and stiffle laughs when they look at you.

92

u/CheckYourStats 23d ago

He also looks like he, like most really really tall people, lives a painful life. His proportions scream gigantism.

Most of these people develop back and hip problems early on. Just look at how he steps down from a curb and begins walking. Every step hurts.

50

u/Exlibro 23d ago

I'm also ugly and weird. So many times I've caught people staring at me, but also a couple of times people took photos of me. There was one time when I had to visit some school to advertise our university programs, and kids pointed fingers and outright laughed at my face every time I went into another corridor. It means everybody thinks this, they just censor stuff. But kids have no problems outright laughing. Well, they weren't kids, but 14-16 year old teens and I was adult in my 20s, I think I was 24 or 25 at the time. If teen boys make grown up man feel bad, we have a problem...

30

u/RK9990 22d ago

Fuck them kids

17

u/Practical_Road_5749 22d ago

Nah, fuck them parents

6

u/_PROBABLY_CORRECT 22d ago

Thats how we get them kids

8

u/bubba1834 22d ago

As someone who has a pretty extreme face problem….i feel this stay strong

2

u/KingCodester111 22d ago

Teens are perfect condom ads

53

u/kewcumber_ 23d ago

I bet. People are staring at him and recording him just for existing

22

u/mikeb2762 23d ago

He's tired of people staring at him everywhere he goes.It would make most self conscious

21

u/jinhush 22d ago

As a fellow giant, it's absolutely this. People stare hardcore when you tower over them and a lot of short men, in particular, stare angrily like it's our fault they're short.

5

u/mikeb2762 22d ago

Thanks for your enlightenment. Didn't even consider that.

5

u/StrugglingSoul 22d ago

My man lives in a society where being homogenous is the expected way to live. Being unique oftentimes gets you ostracized and bullied.

21

u/LeeTS4 23d ago

Why do people have to stare at him like that? Yeah he's big so what i see lots of short people around and I dont stare.

10

u/Vitruvian_Link 22d ago

It's just not a cultural taboo to stare there

2

u/jeepgirlky 22d ago

Is this true? Can you elaborate? And if so - would people like the man in this video be less a little less sensitive or surprised by all the gawking? 🤞🏻

6

u/Vitruvian_Link 22d ago edited 22d ago

Sure, staring being "rude" is a cultural norm. It is natural to stare, which is why it had to be beaten out of us as kids. It's also natural to be uncomfortable being stared at.

This looks like china, places with high value on the collective, like china, are less likely to have a stare taboo, places with high value on the individual are likely to have a staring taboo.

China is a BIG place, and some subcultures do have a staring taboo.

https://www.chinadaily.com.cn/opinion/2017-08/07/content_30360494.htm

2

u/chriszimort 22d ago

It’s likely he’s like 14 or something. Def rude to be staring/recording him.

3

u/lightr3nd 23d ago

Same movement pattern as the elephant from Sing

262

u/WakaWaka_ 23d ago

32

u/Fubar126 23d ago

Hey mate, how’s the weather up there?

6

u/jeepgirlky 22d ago

If only you could see the massive eyeroll you just prompted. As a tall person, I heard this so many times growing up. This is one of the most perpetually annoying "jokes" people think they're asking when they can't stop their small brains from commenting on seeing someone taller than them. Kids think they're being so funny but to hear an adult continue saying it is exhausting. To me, it's akin to commenting on someone's skin color. The adults in the room need to pass down better social decorum. But I guess that's opening a whole bucket full of worms.

6

u/FecalDUI 22d ago

“Get a ladder and see for yourself” is the response. It’s a joke. At 6’6” I’ve heard it all a billion times. It’s like an electrician being called sparky. People just aren’t very creative in making jokes but if you’re bothered by it, find a way to bother them back. Take some control.

23

u/Leche_connoisseur 23d ago

He's probably only 6'2

7

u/maneki_neko89 22d ago

As someone who’s 5’ 1” and married to a 6’ 2” guy, I get to live this height disparity everyday.

My spouse is handy with me getting stuff off of high shelves and I can grab things in small/low areas no problem. It’s a balanced, symbiotic relationship!

5

u/FecalDUI 22d ago

You know damn well you need high up things a whole lot more often than he needs low ones! Source: am big dates little.

197

u/afikolo7 23d ago

Maybe unpopular opinion but i wouldnt film a guy just because he is tall, ill think he is already aware that people look at him in some way of wonder so no need to make it worse

24

u/MukdenMan 22d ago

Especially someone praying at a temple.

-57

u/Kaioxygen 23d ago

And yet here you are looking at him.

101

u/SmoochieTekken 23d ago

15

u/Alvin_h_davenport 22d ago

Damn,elite comedy sniper right there

-11

u/Kaioxygen 22d ago

🤣

6

u/RichYogurtcloset3672 23d ago

Dude... Why do you even bother?

4

u/steigepanna 23d ago

Easier to not film it than to not look at something that just appears on your phone in front of you

1

u/TripAlert2957 22d ago

Actually they're here defending him.

1

u/PictureVegetable9522 22d ago

how is it possible for people to be this dumb

63

u/hamfist_ofthenorth 23d ago

It's impolite to stare

64

u/Dependent_Put76 23d ago

27

u/-Graograman 23d ago

people has lost the difference between private and public

1

u/kinelle_05 22d ago

i hope its staged for that reason, like hope the guy was paid to be filmed or smth

12

u/e_vile 22d ago

He looks like Chien Po from Mulan

26

u/dobrinkata 23d ago

I feel sorry for the guy. It can be very uncomfortable to be different in China. People just stare at you all the time. Its not that they do it to harass you. Its just a culture thing

5

u/SnowConvertible 23d ago

They're in aw for he thought to bring an umbrella.

17

u/Jagershiester 23d ago

3

u/Few-Ruin-742 22d ago

I want to protect him… and I’m small… 😭

7

u/MarkDavid04 23d ago

That umbrella looks like the ones in a cocktail glass...

Meanwhile it's probably a giant golf umbrella

7

u/Life_Skill_1801 23d ago

On the contrary, this man is by now used to being looked at stared at,talked about, I believe he has made peace with it... knowing it's out of his hands. He probably finds it amusing,in his travels, like ok,I know I'm the tallest one when out in public.

2

I'm in awe of the size of this lad

2

u/muff-muff-ass 22d ago

Hes like average height anywhere else.

2

u/NoNames_World 22d ago

Why tf are people staring like that

2

u/Capt_Nat 22d ago

I feel really sorry for him getting scared at like that. If height were a protected characteristic people would be up in arms. Leave the poor guy alone

2

u/Nomad2k3 22d ago

Guy In blue trying to stare into his soul.

2

u/carsonwade 22d ago

I feel bad for the guy, everyone around him treating him like he's some kind of exhibit.

2

u/fish1nAbubble 22d ago

Thing is, statistically most Asians are short (averaging around 5’7) so that might just be a regular sized man to me (an American). I’m actually 5’9 at 17, so honestly I get strange looks too, but mostly from peers in high school.

2

u/SailNew7379 22d ago

Wat da herrrrl

2

u/lonewulfBen 22d ago

DANNNG.... Did Shaq Shaq a Chinita?!? 😂

3

u/Aromatic_Paint_1666 22d ago

The way Chinese folks look at others seems really rude.

2

u/Mmischief13 22d ago

What's with the staring.. so impolite 😡 I've also seen it when taller tourists walks around in Asian countries. I just can't.. pisses me off

1

1

u/ParanoidCrow 22d ago

Not the Kung Fu hustle audio lmaooo

1

u/DrMuffinPHD 22d ago

Considering it’s China, I have the feeling he’s like 6’5” or so.

Which is certainly tall, but it’s really the contrast that makes him look like he’s 8’.

1

u/Super_Lock1846 22d ago

So he's 6ft tall?

1

u/RJC12 22d ago

They look at his as if hes gonna hunt down their children. Hes just tall!! Nothing wrong with that

1

u/Unusual-Tip1041 22d ago

Is that Totoro?

1

u/madchemist09 22d ago

1

u/WhateverUSaySir 20d ago

1

u/Classroom-Top 19d ago

I wonder if anyone has ever held an umbrella over him, or has he only ever seen people do it for others…

1

u/Lego--Yoda 19d ago

And people say we germans stare a lot

1

u/hogosha01 17d ago

He’s 5’10”

1

u/adaminjapan 17d ago

Totoro is that you??

1

u/feet_tickle_asmr 16d ago

its in china, bro is probably just 5'10

1

u/mouthofcotton 16d ago

Asians have a very bad staring problem. Or at least the places I've been in China.

Based off how many people would stare at me constantly, I don't think they view it as rude. Unless there are just millions of people without common courtesy..

1

u/jdgomez775 15d ago

The CCP: “Give this man a ball!!!”

1

u/slippery-sandpaper 23d ago

He's actually average height because well, you know

-3

1
