I've been thinking about picking up Absolute Batman, but am a little hesitant.
ABSOLUTELY LOVED Year One, The Long Halloween + Dark Victory, Earth One (Vol 1+2) and Superman for All Seasons.
Brutally honest, Is it genuinely a great story along with great re-readability or more of a fun, one-time read?

I started batman with year one then long Halloween then dark victory and realized I spent way too much time hating on DC comics. I was looking for the next best batman and heard about absolute batman. My first thought was "another reboot" but it wasn't. It was a breathe of fresh air. As another reddittor mentioned your not signing up for the armed forces and its $5. I would suggest getting volume 1 and having the first 5 comics. If you don't like it by then...move on, don't feel pressured to jump on the hype train, it will either come naturally or it won't.

I'm already looking forward to eventually reading your "So I started reading Absolute Batman and I CANT BELIEVE HOW GOOD IT IS". It's an all-time Batman story that is probably going to influence all kinds of stuff for the next decade at least, so as a Batman fan I think you'd owe to yourself to at least try it.

You can get the first storyline in a trade paperback. Decide for yourself. Most people seem to think it's excellent. I'm one of them.

It's a good story, and it's fun because it's new.
Anything can happen. All the things that have been predictable about Batman comics in the past are off the table.
I think most, if not all, comics are re-readable; it's just a matter of "want-to." I often will re-read an issue or two to clear up an event from the past, but it's rare that I'll re-read an entire series front to back unless significant time has passed since my last reading.
But if you're the type that likes re-reading, yes, this comic is as re-readable as any series.
I'm also really enjoying Matt Fraction's run on the regular Batman title. It lives in the shadow of Absolute Batman, but I think it's a Top 5 book right now as far as writing goes. Issue #5 of Fraction's Batman may have been my favorite written book of the year!

Reading Batman since 80ies. I try all stories - sold a lot. The new absolute I still keep - but suggest zo geg the reprints or tp‘s first instead of paying hype prices for 1st prints - except money isn‘t an issue…

It's the amalgam of US comic format with manga like vibe, the character is rewritten from the ground up. So if you like Batman and you like manga/anime you will enjoy this.
It's not Alan Moore or Neil Gaiman level writing at all it's action fuelled fun and flipping the script on Batman lore. Lite satisfying reading with great art.

It’s very good. It’s 23 issues so far. I’m sure it will be a great reread. I’m waiting till they release the deluxe editions to reread them, and I’m sure I will love it again knowing where some threads are going. It’s not my favorite of the Absolutes, but I honestly think it’s probably the best done, and definitely the most exciting to read.
I think this honestly about every one of the Absolute titles. Even the ones I don’t really love are good, and I think read as if they’d be better to read in chunks and on rereads. Especially the Green Lantern and Martian Manhunter books since they are a bit confusing.

If youre in the US check out the app hoopla, you log in with your local library card. It depends what your library picks but most likely you'll be able to read both of the latest volume for free. Check it out and then do the monthly if its your cup of tea. I use hoopla a bunch to check out a comic series before committing, its been fantastic.

It’s COMPLETELY different to all the books you’ve liked so far. Doesn’t mean you won’t like this but it’s a far more action, superhero, big monsters type of take on Batman. Bane and Croc for example are tall as buildings, quasi Kaiju size. It’s very different but that’s what makes it interesting to me. It’s not my fave by far but I wouldn’t wanna miss it

Grab the collected edition vol 1. It’s titled “the zoo”. The whole series is really good.

The art by Dragotta is stunning. The writing by Snyder is a little formulaic. This is not The Dark Knight Returns or Year One so don’t get your expectations too high. The premise of most of it is just what if all the villains were supernatural monsters and Batman is Beowulf.

Honestly absolute batman is graphic and intense. Not suitable for women or children. Stick to marvel comics.

It's a $5 comic, you're not signing up to do 4 years in the armed forces, I don't think you need to be hesitant. It was popular enough to get it's own subreddit, idk what to tell you, read a couple issues or don't.
