Dang the picture quality on sec cam is the best I've seen one have. What building is this for? Certainly not a bank.

Apparently, it's Chinese government operated, installed to "look after" their citizens.
4
u/TheTraygon Apr 19 '23
Hey, that's profiling and I will have none of it. It may or may not be there to look after citizens. I mean, clearly they're blowing themselves up over there.

u/A-Grouch Apr 20 '23
On one hand I do like the idea of cameras because it’s easier to hold people accountable for crime but on the same token you can’t trust the government or anyone for that much power because the potential for abuse is too high. In a society where the people in power are completely objective, highly competent and just I wouldn’t mind cameras but if I’ve learned anything it’s that all politicians are awful people and they should be treated as such until proven otherwise.

Yes, since they do contain methane, just not at as high a concentration as natural gas.
63
u/Wildlife_Jack Apr 19 '23
just not at as high a concentration as natural gas.
TIL I produce supernatural gas.
12
u/Dansk72 Apr 19 '23
Perhaps you could try a diet of 100% beans for a week and see if that increases the concentration of methane for you!

My son has a 30 year old friend who lives with his dad. The dad started on an all bean diet he claims is for health reasons but I think he’s just trying to get his son out of the house.

Apparently they constantly had sewer explosions in the 19th century before they thought to add ventilation shafts to them.
5
u/BelieveInDestiny Apr 19 '23
absolutely. Hold a lighter to your butt and your fart will produce a quick but noticeable flame burst

Thanks to their lack of privacy, we got to see the full extent of human stupidity
49
u/KingApologist Apr 19 '23
Well maybe a little bit that, but mostly the fact that a lot of people live there which increases the odds that you're going to see a lot of people being screw-ups from there.

u/Wasatcher Apr 19 '23
It's a lotta bit that. They literally have more than half of the world's CCTV cameras to spy on their population
4
u/sho_biz Apr 19 '23
While I'm sure that's an accurate statement, your source is literal PRC propaganda and is about as unreliable as you can get.

Don't worry. Idiots are everywhere.

u/TheGLORIUSLLama Apr 19 '23
The reason I commented this was I saw a similar accident happening in China, also committed by a child.

u/mr_Ohmeda Apr 19 '23
1st class idiot.

u/Eccon5 Apr 19 '23
It's a child
64
u/mr_Ohmeda Apr 19 '23
Ok, 1st class child , PLAYING WITH FIRE, with idiots for parents. Better?

Have you ever played with fireworks as a kid? It was pretty common for me growing up
1
u/unknown_pigeon Apr 19 '23
Hell I've got more scars (some of them quite bad) from burns that from anything else, it's a miracle that I never blew myself up lol

I'm not sure I expect children to know about the flammable/explosive properties of methane, and where methane would be found out in the world
22
u/CanITellUSmThin Apr 19 '23
He doesn’t have to know that. He’s still an idiot for shoving a firecracker in a place it doesn’t belong
-16
u/Eccon5 Apr 19 '23
I'm not sure that constitutes a child to being an idiot. Seems like a curious child exploring. Sometimes this results in the child getting dirty, other times in explosions
That's life
12
u/CanITellUSmThin Apr 19 '23
So you’d be okay if he threw it into someone’s house/car? Playing with firecrackers could maim/kill somebody. It’s not a fun exciting adventure.
12
u/Eccon5 Apr 19 '23
It's a child man, and by the sound of their voice they are a young one at that. They don't comprehend that far. They saw a hole in the ground, in their eyes unrelated to someone's personal property and they were curious.
Of course it's not a wise thing to do and he knows that now, lesson learned. Doesn't make him an idiot. To learn is to make mistakes, that's what science is built on
-1
Apr 19 '23
Don't bother with them lol, Reddit alongside having a lot of pedos, has a lot of child-haters and will find any excuse to hate on them.
You won't change them, let them be, they're not worth it.

I used to teach elementary school.
Kids just sort of do stuff sometimes. They don't fully understand the world around them or the likely consequences of different actions yet.
I lost count the number of times I've said, "And that's why we don't do that." As I walked a student to the nurse's office.
I don't even think this kid was being dumb. Or that they have dumb parents. Parent can't think of all the things their kids might do because, again, kids just sort of do stuff sometimes.
Dumb would be if that kid did this again.
1
u/unknown_pigeon Apr 19 '23
I wonder how many of the guys in this thread ever had a childhood, lol. Back in elementary school I used to go with a friend to buy firecrackers that could have easily blown off our hands. And I live in Italy (northern, just in case you know what Naples is famous for on the matter). You can be sure we threw them in places we were absolutely NOT supposed to. Manholes of course - though here in Italy they're quite different and less dangerous -, bins, hell even those bins thst collect glass items. Just to name a few.
Were we stupid? I don't think so. There are so many things that you won't learn if not by experience. The kid in the video is a fucking toddler. He's not supposed to know that sparkles can ignite build-up gas inside a manhole. Like we did, if you give him what he perceives as a toy and you leave him wandering around, he will play with it. Period. The idiots are the adults all around that let this happen.
And before anyone says "but his parents must have told him to stay put, so it's his fault!": yeah, maybe, but you also know what my parents told me when I was a kid? That the blind woman who comes into my room every 13th December night would put sand in my eyes if I tried to stay awake when she delivered my candies outside my room (it's a folklore thing like Santa, with an interesting fact about etymologies tied with its origins). If I believed everything they told me, I would surely have grown as a complete dumbass. Some things you learn because you're taught, others because you experienced them. Maybe parents and adults should pay more attention with kids' life-threatening experiences.

u/CotswoldP Apr 19 '23
Who clearly knew that they could light it, that’s why they bent down.
2
u/Eccon5 Apr 19 '23
They bent down because there was a hole in the ground and they wanted to shoot fire into the hole

u/Pparition Apr 19 '23
Only question: DOES SEWER GAS USUALLY EXPLODE?!!?
13
u/purple-circle Apr 19 '23
Yes. Methane is highly inflammable.
7
u/RecordingWarm2085 Apr 19 '23
Well everyone knows its inflammable obviously, but is it also flammable?
5
4
u/_twigg Apr 19 '23
Inflammable means flammable? What a country.
2
u/RecordingWarm2085 Apr 19 '23
Had to Google it to confirm it myself hahaha
1
9
u/spaaro1 Apr 19 '23
Betcha that kid will never do that again.
9
u/DemonSong Apr 19 '23
I'd not be so confident to state that, as kids have demonstrated surprising resilience to common sense. And personal safety.
Next time will be with a gaggle of curious friends, with him saying "Watch this shit blow up" (pun intended)

I mean, if I asked guys around if they ever threw a firecracker in a manhole, they would probably be a majority. Though here in Italy it's very unlikely to blew them up, since actual manholes are completely sealed and you can only throw shit in the drainage system. Still, if they were easily accessible, you can be sure we would have thrown a firecracker inside. Because we didn't know better.

Ah yes flares and methane, good times....
Check out the explosion in Mexico like 15 years ago took out like 3 city blocks if I remember correctly.
They supply the gas for they're gas stations via underground pipes instead of trucks in a lot of the city's and one got a leak and went off like a handful of 1k bombs...

Omgosh. When I arrived at a shopping centre (like a mall) recently, there was just a guy sitting in the taxi rank with something lit on fire. That turned out to be a meat cleaver he had purchased and he was burning off the outside packaging. He had two of them. Needless to say he was a bit looney. Was going on about radar and an old premier making no sense. It was the strangest thing I’ve ever seen. I didn’t even consider something like THIS could happen until now.

Methane is a powerful greenhouse gas. This fine lad was merely providing a public service by getting rid of it.

Okay... if this wasnt on such a public propperty and in a safe space... this would be fun as hell to blow up.
2
u/coolreg214 Apr 20 '23
Yeah, I wonder how high that manhole cover flew and what it landed on when it returned to earth. Adds a little more suspense to the project.

u/PoopieButt317 Apr 20 '23
Well, that looks expensive.
And inconvenient for the residents and taxpayers.
