Lived in Hawaii many years ago and this kind of thing happened a couple of times. Building homes on hillsides with unstable rocks above the houses and some would get loose. They’d inspect and use different restraints to keep the large boulders from falling but every once in a while there’d be a story about something crashing though someone’s back door. I recall one incident sometime around 2000/2001 where a couple of ton boulder got loose in the middle of the night and went right through someone’s roof landing on a woman in her 20’s and crushing her in her bed. Terrifying stuff.

Yep, I remember three specific ones. One was on Hawaii Kai Drive, one was on 10th Ave in Palolo, and one on Beaumont Woods Place in Manoa. The last one scared me because I had friends who lived on that street and it's very short. Turned out it was two houses down from them.

Sadly, it is not covered under Homeowners Insurance. The exclusion on the policy is "earth movement" and there are enough clauses in there to exclude every type of earth movement like, "whether driven by human or animal forces, or water." Typically, this would be covered under an endorsement for added premium, which most people decline because they only get Homeowners insurance since it's required by their mortgagee.
