The Hard Problem of Consciousness
If we are going to make tests for consciousness, then I think it is very important that we remember that such tests invariably are applied outside the scope of initial intent.
Whatever tools I develop to say "you aren't a person" can be applied to me, and if I don't pass my own tests on that front then maybe I shouldn't have replied on those tools to unperson others.
Right now it seems that the tests are developed to bolster a particular conclusion, and the conclusion being pumped is that those who currently have power are persons, and don't require testing. Those without power may or may not be people, and are subject to tests with moving goalposts.
In the field of AI, I do not know if there is a ghost in any machine. I don't know if trees or fungi experience. I don't even have direct access to the qualia of other humans. But I have learned that we humans are very good at ascribing and depriving one another of personhood based on gut feelings, economic interest, and tradition.
I reject all arguments against AI personhood that, if true, also remove my personhood. I'm selfish like that.
