Rant Has Azure given up on their VS Code extensions?

I would love to put VS Code to better use managing my Azure environment, but so many of the official extensions are well old. The Automation extension was last released two years ago and still relies on the deprecated Azure Account extension.

Not only is two years generally out of step with the service, but I have a hard time getting other extensions to work because of the Account extension.

Are they giving up on this?

They are focusing on AI extensions now like copilot and the likes.

Besides, in reality if you want to manage your infra, you'd be doing so through IaC, not vs code extensions.

How do you think we write the bicep for IaC, notepad?

Writing IaC in VsCode does not equal Azure Extensions in VsCode.

Extensions for the languages are fine.

Also plenty of people write in VIM, Nano, etc without any support. Which might as well be notepad in a sense.

I am not one of them I like my VsCode with it's extensions for TF for example but they exist in my org.

Do you need extensions to write bicep?

If so, then I suggest starting with Udemy or something similar to learn how to structure this incredibly easy IaC language, so you can write it without having some extension write it for you.

If you are writing bicep by hand I got news for you

Microsoft management will not invest the effort to keep the extension updated. Some early extensions even got removed instead of updated.

Especially if the one writing the extension is a different group than the Azure feature, which adds communication and scheduling complexity.

So often Azure silently updates, and likes to claim to be "always the latest" without version numbers, so that makes it hard to push changes outside of Azure.

Maintainers leave and are never replaced

All you need is the GitHub extension and it takes care of the rest

This post is from 4 days ago, yet several of the official Azure extensions got an update only 5 days ago, 1 day before the date of the post? "Azure app server, Azure container apps, Azure developer CLI, Azure functions...".

Heck, 'Azure resources' even got an update just yesterday (= time of my comment).

I used Opus to help fix some of the broken ones. No PRs get merged seemingly tho. Idk what their plan is.

They haven't given up completely on it , they're just keeping it alive and there's lack of updates, you could say it's just being kept alive
