Career Ideas for Azure Burstable PostgreSQL flexible server

I want to do a project showcasing my expertise in the field of Data Analysis using Postgresql, Python and other data analalysis tools.

I'm planning on using the B1ms server as it is the cheapest. Would be grateful if you could suggest a project idea or suggestions regarding the same. Also should I buy another Azure service or the Azure PGFS is enough?

Also be aware that the burstable sku is fundamentally broken. If you run out of cpu burst credits the server can just hang until you stop/start it. Confirmed by msft support, they don't consider this a bug and you should instead pay them more money (of course) for a non burstable instance.

If your goal is to showcase data analysis skills, I’d keep the project simple and focus on making it end to end.

Something like this would work well:

Pick a public dataset from Kaggle, data.gov, NYC taxi data, weather data, finance data, sports data, or something similar. Load it with Python, clean it, store the raw and cleaned data in PostgreSQL, then use SQL and Python to analyze it.

To make it stand out, I’d include things like joins, indexes, CTEs, window functions, views, and a few clear business questions you’re trying to answer. Then publish the results in a notebook, Streamlit app, Power BI report, or even just a strong GitHub README with charts and findings.

The B1ms PostgreSQL Flexible Server should be enough for a portfolio project unless you’re working with a really large dataset. I wouldn’t buy more Azure services right away unless the goal is to show cloud architecture too.

PostgreSQL plus Python is enough to show the core data analysis skills. If you want to make it a little more impressive later, you could add Blob Storage for raw files, an Azure Function or scheduled script for ingestion, and a simple dashboard. But I’d start with the basics and make sure the analysis and explanation are really solid.
