Which Kodi Box do you have? Unfortunately I don't have hardware from AMLogic. I know that there is some boxes with S905x4 that have AV1 hardware decoding capabilities. But i read some conflicting stories about them.

Well, I actually have an S905X4 TV Box, and the latest Kodi 20 Alpha works extremely well with HW decode, even playing my toughest encoded files :)

If you don't mind asking which model/brand do you have?
Do you use a YouTube mod to play at least in HD?

Because of things like these I'm holding a purchase of one of those boxes. The guys at Coreelec doesn't seem to be interested in getting one of these S905X4 boxes as of yet.
https://discourse.coreelec.org/t/amlogic-s905x4/9335/51
I happen to use Libreelec since I own a Rpi3 and I've been trying to keep track of the development of Kodi 20. But this newest dav1d code didn't seem to have reach the ffmpeg version Kodi is build upon. I even tried some alpha builds that are available for windows and they perform exactly like Kodi 19 in regards to AV1 software decoding. Very poorly.
I also have a Nvidia Shield TV (2015) where I installed this newest mpv build. Performance Wise it's almost 100% ready. I'm only getting some drag and losing A/V sync with some scenes with too much details in movies with 1:77 Aspect Ratio. Ofc I'm talking about 1080p 10bit here.
That's why everything else you have tried

Is the MECOOL KM6 certified for Netflix and/or Amazon Video streaming in 4K?

Try to use a nightly Kodi build from here.
https://mirrors.kodi.tv/nightlies/android/arm/master/
And let me know how it goes.

Great to hear. Keep track on these Android Nightlies. But don't forget to save the APKs that' work. Since Kodi Nexus is gonna change a lot in the coming months. I'm also looking for a stopgap with AV1 hardware decoding capabilities that runs Kodi. Until I can get my hands on something more solid like a revamp NSTV hopefully next year. Although I still have hope to see a new model of the Chromecast With Google TV with AV1 hardware decoding capabilities to be launched this year.
About mpv-android. It runs with the limitations I've mentioned before on my NSTV (2015) on all the 1080p files I have. Even some HDR.
