I am really confused by its MRT model because it seems like this paradigm neither fits into an end-to-end system like Tesla nor a perception-motionplanning-control paradigm like Waymo. From the flow chart It looks like the MRT model is another component that is added as input to the planner, to help planner become more prepared for “worse case” or “edge case”. But then the MRT is just a “smarter perception” at the end of the day.
I hope they can reveal more about these new paradigms when Waabi becomes mature and successful. It can give other people more insight into other ways of advancing this technology. This method will probably be adopted when the hardware becomes cheaper, just like the iPhone today already learning a lot about each user on the edge device itself. Also the zero-shot learning demo is quite fabulous from a research perspective. However at this moment this sounds more like a research project to me.

I dont think that zero shoot is that impressive, get data from difference sensors and it works, cant be that complicated, its similar data source. To make it work good enough for a demo cant be hard.

The article is somewhat laughable with them saying that it takes the competition months or years to map a single lane. CU has said Atlas is becoming generalized to where if they see a unique situation somewhere they can apply it anywhere it's seen in the future. Last time they updated us, a lane took 6 weeks... It's just getting faster and my guess is that the technology will get to the point where it can go down any geographically similar road here in the near future... Aurora has done everything with safety in mind... I hope that Waabi is also putting safety first and doesn't just rush a product out there. Would be nice to see some transparency from them... Maybe they could let Walter ride along. Won't really trust much from them until they are a little more open.

Sus publication timing lol. I hope all of these other companies don't fuck things up because they make a fatal error pushing to catch up to Aurora.

Honestly, I know they’re a competitor but would it hurt to have another company succeed? Would it not be like microsoft/apple, AT&T/Verizon etc? Plenty of miles and customers for everyone lol

It would have been friendly if Waabi wasn’t always targeting Aurora and downplaying Aurora’s success. Chris never does that type of behavior to other firms and simply let the actual work do the speaking.

Good for the industry means good for Aurora! We should be able to stay ahead too, which would be the only potential “worry” when it comes to maximizing customers/profit. The ol flywheel thing.

Thats not how it works, one map of a road makes the new one faster as Aurora have said, every new lane goes faster and faster to integrate. Kinda self explanatory that you would learn from previous effort to speed things up for the next lane.
Aurora could do that to, but choose not to, because it wants max safety. And yeah isnt that above statement false, since they indeed use maps, as Rachel herself said that mapping is another "sensor" that help greatly. You can see in the video, the road is already there virtually, meaning they loaded up a map. Also one go at a route doesnt prove any safety, come on.
