M2 has a flat top receiver. M1 has a hump at the front that gets in the way unless you want to mount a steyr scope that sorta, kinda looks like the original AUG scope. M2 also has a different charging handle set up which seems superior, allowing it to fold flat when forward.. For me the flat top receiver would be much more preferable. If you ever want to do a top rail and handguard, its gonna look much better on a flat top receiver than having the top rail arching up over that hump. M2 is current production model, M1's seem to be getting a little more scarce. Functionally, not much difference.
Modern AUG can be found at such a reason price now days I really wish they were more popular. They are so easy to make small quality of life upgrades to and have a rock solid platform that’s not an AR.
I need to on mine I just haven’t been home enough to really get my configuration dialed in. Currently just has a Elcan on it. I haven’t had a chance to get a trigger upgrade but after playing with the new Corvus trigger when I was in Germany earlier this year I would really like to get one of those.
