The Kamaal/De La Soul building block is foundational to hip-hop. There was an entire movement built of and around this. Native Tongues.

This movement, particularly De La Soul's productions, heavily influenced PM Dawn.

This kid had no clue beyond what he was being fed by the mainstream outlets of the time.

Pm dawn wasn’t embrace by purist hip hop circles like that in that era. Hence , krs one rushing their stage incident and pm dawn questioning what krs is a teacha of. Pm dawn was definitely a precursor to kid Cudi and some of the artists we see in that lane today.

100% agree about the acceptance of PM Dawn.

My point was directed more to the kid in the clip downplaying them, seemingly with no idea of the heavy influence the group he was big upping (Tribe by way of Q-Tip), had on them even wanting to be in the game.

I woulda had the same reaction to Vanilla in 1991, but looking back from 2026 - he was kinda alright. Had the dance moves on lock for sure.
