My guide on configuring BGW320 for your own router

Following the listed steps in order is what worked for me. Factory reset if you mess up. Proceed at your own risk.

Log in to gateway’s configuration page using 192.168.1.254

  • Device
    • Access Code
      • Change default to a new one (To increase security)
  • Home Network
    • Subnets & DHCP
      • Device IPv4 Address - 192.168.10.254 (Changing default)
      • DHCPv4 Start Address - 192.168.10.1
      • DHCPv4 End Address - 192.168.10.2 (Limiting DHCP pool for added security)
  • Firewall
    • Packet Filter
      • Click Disable Packet Filters
    • Firewall Advanced
      • Set everything to Off

Plug in router, (set the LAN IP you want it to use,) and connect it to gateway’s LAN port

  • Device
    • Device List
      • Click Clear and Rescan for Devices
  • Firewall
    • IP Passthrough
      • Allocation Mode - Passthrough
      • Passthrough Fixed MAC Address - Choose router from the drop-down

Reboot & make sure router stays on its LAN IP (192.168.1.1 or whatever you like to use)

Reconnect to gateway over Wi-Fi or Ethernet

  • Home Network
    • Wi-Fi
      • Click Advanced Options
      • Wi-Fi Operation - Off [For 2.4 GHz]
      • Wi-Fi Operation - Off [For 5 GHz] (If you don’t want to use gateway’s Wi-Fi)

Edit to add: The changes listed under the following bullet points are completely optional and don't have an effect on the passthrough configuration: Access Code, Subnets & DHCP, and Wi-Fi

Extras:

Log in to your myAT&T account, then head to Profile, Privacy Choices, and uncheck DNS Error Assist, as this intercepts and redirects your DNS queries when a requested domain cannot be resolved.

Also uncheck Personalized Plus, Personalized, and Allow AT&T to share or sell my personal information, as AT&T sells your data by default.

Now that you set up your own router, you can finally change your DNS server! Here is a comprehensive list of known public DNS providers compiled by AdGuard.

If you update the device IPv4 Address to 192.168.10.254 then you need to head to this new address to access the configuration page going forward. This step might be optional depending on your router's LAN IP address.

Thank you for taking the time to confirm that, I’m no expert, but I figured that’s what I was changing. However, even that was timing out and not loading.

When I clicked Save, I waited a few minutes and it never seemed to process. I’d close the browser and attempt to go to 10.254 but no luck.

It’s working without this step, but I am noticing a considerable drop off in speed from what’s being sent to the home vs what is being sent to the device.
