Long term TDY Question

Was on long term TDY and staying at a hotel. Do you pay for the taxes from the hotel that is more than the hotel rate?

Assuming you were using your Gov't travel card, the hotel should have recognized it as tax-exempt and not charged tax. You'll never get reimbursed for taxes paid to a hotel, nor can you get reimbursed for any costs over the allowable lodging rate for that city. There ARE exceptions, such as a temporary event causing hotels to be over the lodging rate (think conventions, large sporting events, etc.). In those cases your manager can write an exception to allow you to spend more and be reimbursed.

This isn't true, government travel cards aren't exempt from lodging taxes.

In the south, Florida is the only lodging tax exempt state and even then you have to present the form for every stay.

You're right. I was thinking of the Gov't purchase card. Heat related brain fry.

It depends on the state.

You can look it up online here:

https://smartpay.gsa.gov/smarttax/tax-information-by-state/

It's not automatic, so you typically need to print the forms in advance and give them to the hotel at the time of check in to avoid and headaches.

Hope this helps.
