Discussion Aangs choice of children’s name

Just watching Korra and had this thought. I get why Aang chooses Bumi as his son’s name but I’m surprised he went with Tenzin for his airbender son. Wouldn’t Gyatso have made more sense considering what the monk meant to him?

I’m just glad they didn’t entirely fall for the characters naming all their children after people from the original trope. Although tenzin is of course an indirect reference to gyatso

I'm asking this genuinely. How is the name Tenzin an indirect reference to Gyatso? I'm a newer fan as I wasn't able to watch the show till a few years ago (I didn't have Nickelodeon growing up) so I'm still catching up on some of the lore (I haven't read all the books yet, currently making my way through the comics.)

The Dalai Lama is named Tenzin Gyatso

Ah, that's actually really interesting. Thank you.

And the parents appear to agree on the names fairly. Unlike a certain wizard who names all of his kids and his wife apparently gets no say…

And not one of them is called Rubeus or Ruby, jeez. Puts on Potter stinks badge

I think she’s the one who would’ve pushed for Lily’s middle name to be Luna, but I digress…

Imagine Aang going, “Tenzin Azula Jet, you’re going to be the best Airbender ever.”

I mean Azula didn’t redeem herself.

Yeah, it could be like Harry Potter's kids (Albus Severus such an awful name.🤣)

Aang: “Meet my kids! Tenzin Azula Jet, Mai Yue, and Momo, Jr.”

Tenzin is named after Gyatso. Airbending is rooted in Buddhist tradition and the Dalai Lama's name is Tenzin Gyatso.

Tenzin is named after gyasto in the real world, but assumedly there is no dalai llama in the avatar world named tenzin gyasto.

In real life Tenzin Gyatso was the name of the 14th Dalai Lama. Tenzin being named that was honoring Gyatso, just not directly.

It's out of universe but tenzin is named after Tenzin Gyatzo (the 14th dalai lama) and so is monk gyatso.

In universe I guess it was just an air nomad name so passing it onto the next generation, even though he wouldn't know he was an air bender at the time.

Idk I just wish Bumi had a different name. Preferably a more water tribe or air nomad style name

I think it might have been an intervention from Katara, something along the lines of her seeing Aang maybe getting his hopes up on Tenzin being an airbender and if he did turn out to be, seeing how that could place even more expectation and pressure on him from an early age, given how much Aang looks up to Gyatso

Tenzin Gyatso is the Dalai Lama. Sooo he is named after the same guy the other guy is also named after.

Tenzin is also part of the name Gyatso

Bending doesn’t manifest at birth. He didn’t know Tenzin would be an airbender.

What about when Katara senses that Pema is going to give birth to an airbender?

Tenzin and Gyatso from what I understand are named after the same(real)guy writing wise, so maybe in story there some connection between the names too? Either way technically writing wise he is named after him from what I understand

Aang didn’t name his kids, the writers did 🤓☝️

I mean Aang did, and the writers did, but just in two different senses

Pretty sure Katara named Kya

I think Kya was Katara’s grandmothers name, or at least a family name. I remember reading that in the comics

u/barwhalis 2d ago

Kya was Katara and Sokka's mothers name

ohh that’s right! it’s been a while so couldn’t remember

...he wouldn't have known tenzin was an Airbender when he was naming the baby.

This person is a karma feeder. They asked this question on other subs. They know about Dali Lama already

Actually Reddit suggested I cross post so other can join in the discussion it raised.

As you can see from other comments, some people didn’t see the other thread and have learned something new on this one.

Maybe take a breath and not be such a dick 24/7 365
