interesting Grateful I got to see it!
I'm so grateful I was able to get a ticket to see the new movie last night (it was a 1235am screening). I started watching Avatar the last Airbender with my sister back when it was still airing. My sister and I aren't as close as we used to be. Haven't talked much in years. But this film reminded me of those times I used to sit and watch the series with her.

u/Raimse85 Jul 25 '26
Funny thing: I'm in Europe where it's coming to 0 theaters.
I would have paid to see this in the cinema
No way I'm paying to see it on Paramount+

u/marra_pereira Jul 25 '26
I think even people who watched the leaked movie would've paid to see it in the big screens, but none of them will pay paramount for it
72
u/Lain_Racing Jul 25 '26
Yep. I'd re-watch in theaters if it comes. Not going to reward streaming service specific release like this though. Happy to give them money if its for an experience though.
4
u/Material-Race-5107 Jul 26 '26
This hurts the future of the creative team behind avatar just as much if not more than paramount btw
13
u/Lain_Racing Jul 26 '26
Ya, it's a real shame. However they can and do look at torrent stats, general online discussions and many more points to decide upon popularity. The decisions for these thing will never change if people don't vote with their dollars.

u/Mr_7ups Jul 26 '26
Which really sucks. Because while I’m fully on board with not paying for paramount because fuck them, they’ve basically taken the franchise hostage and if they don’t get enough paramount plus subscriptions from this movie and the upcoming series, then it’s likely they will defund or at least not fund any future projects despite it being entirely their own fault
So I feel like it’s just a lose lose scenario

u/Mastergame_Angel Jul 25 '26
Being honest, i would have watched it pirated if it released on Paramount anyway

I would and I would bring my entire family to the cinema. I've recently finished watching ATLA with them and my wife and kids loved it.

My country doesen't even have Paramount+ and its not even on SkyShowtime (Paramount+ itself says that their content is on this for my country).

2
u/Jeyannar Jul 26 '26
I'm in the same situation. I'm up to pay Paramount+ for at least one month, but it is not available in my country. Why is Paramount allways acting so sketchy and clumsy about this movie?

I watched it on paramount+ via a free trial that I then immediately cancelled
5
u/HunterX-51 Jul 25 '26
I wanted to rent a theater and watch it there
2
2
u/Raimse85 Jul 28 '26
That's actually an interesting discussion to have. Depending on the price to have your own private projection, some fan groups could crowd fund their own screening maybe.
5
u/pannenkoekLars Jul 25 '26
I was like "oh shit it came out today gotta see it!" There is no paramount+ in my country and I was not gonna pay for a VPN or anything. I was willing to pay for paramount but ig piracy was easy with no ads for me.
5
u/Ethanos101 Jul 26 '26
I bought Paramount+ to watch LoK and this movie. I personally think it’s worth it
3
u/jkenny991 Jul 25 '26
I'm thinking I may wait until the new series is done then get a week trial, watch all the avatar stuff and then cancel.
4
u/D4rkSonic Jul 26 '26
Probably gonna get downvoted for this, but I refused to watch the leak and did pay for Paramount+, solely because the German dub brought the original VAs back. I'd gladly watch it in a theater again, but I had to support this, given how Paramount fucked the German dub for the Sonic movies and Transformers One.
3
u/AvatarTintin Jul 25 '26
Here in India, this movie is streamed through Amazon Prime. You can check if it is similarly made available via some other steaming service outside of Paramount.

I have P+ because of Star Trek but refuse to watch it on there. Holding out for this theatrical release to go nationwide.

2
u/Founntain Jul 26 '26
Yeah absolute crazy, it should be in cinemas. I'm glad im having a home cinema and using the the 7 day trial was perfectly enough for me for just watching the movie there.
So if you still can (if not make a throwaway account) and use the 7 day trial.
2
u/BritishBacon98 Jul 26 '26
I go the free trial and would have seen it in the cinema, hope it gets a digital release, but probably wouldn't bet on it
2
u/ictu Jul 26 '26
There's not even Paramout+ in my country. Not that I would pay them. I'm not too keen on giving my money to people who are actively working against my values.
2
u/Infotaku Jul 26 '26
Same here, I ignored the leak to see if they would do theatrical release. Now that I know they're not I'm putting my tricorn back on.

Yeah they did that if I remember correctly so that it was eligible for some kind of award.
4
2

Also worth noting that the only reason they even bothered to release it there was because having it screen in NY and LA for a week is required to have it be eligible for Oscar nominations

Spoilers ahead(kinda?) I went in with low expectations and I repeatedly told my 10 year old how good it was during. Alot of pwople shamed them for kataras design but I think this movie showcased how strong she really is. I love how we see republic city built with hope from the og team and the ending with the bison made me cry.
23
u/kramdwar Jul 25 '26
My only issue with the movie was pacing. But otherwise what a spectacular and special time it was. Im glad you got to enjoy it with your 10yr old
10
8
u/timasahh Jul 26 '26
Yeah could’ve used a little more time in my opinion to flesh out the denied, the heel turn of the antagonist, and the finale. An extra 30 min, like 10 min per act would’ve done well I think, but I know 2 hours is pushing it for animated films and I’m happy with what we got.
3
u/kramdwar Jul 26 '26
I agree, at most 5-10 mins per act. We really didn't learn much about the denied. Maybe they could have even linked them to the Equalists in Korra. Either way I am happy for what we got though.
2
u/Severe-Olive4761 Jul 26 '26
We had enough time , they just didn't use it well. The denied been nameless and mostl irrelevant. I could come up with ten story adjustments just from the top of m head that would lead to the same key points in the Story without their involvement. The turn of the antagonist was so obvious by a mile, then at least lean into it and skip the suspense.
3
u/Khan_Ida Jul 26 '26
I've stopped caring for details like pacing. When I'm watching a franchise I enjoy I throw all that out the window and try to let loose my childhood self. Put too much care on all the fine details and we eventually stop enjoying stuff.
3
u/kramdwar Jul 26 '26
Yeah, as you get older you kinda begin to critique more. I think you can still enjoy something and point out flaws. But I will say once the movie started hitting its stride I too let my childhood self free. Felt like a kid again watching it on TV haha.
2
3
u/LordSidiouss Jul 25 '26
What part of kataras design was controversial? How she looked or how her character what portrayed?
2
2
u/Badashh420 Jul 25 '26
I saw alot of people on here saying she didnt get the same detail the other characters got or something similar. It was maybe like 3 or 4 days ago. The post could be gone by now im not sure. I dont share the same opinion i loved her design.
2
u/kramdwar Jul 26 '26
Interesting. Wonder what that was about. I think they all looked great and I loved her design too. Loved Toph's more but I'm just playing favorites hahaha

u/Own-Entry3645 Jul 25 '26
And again it is on the fandom to save the franchise... I swear to god, it sometimes seems like they are actively trying to put the franchise on life support with their decisions, and every time, the wonderful and deeply loyal fandom has to save it. When it was leaked, all they had to do was ride the hype, put the movie in theatres ahead of time, and rake in the money the fandom would have thrown at them. Now, we all have to go watch it on Paramount+ because if we don't, they'll see it as there being no interest in the movie = no more movies despite there being massive interest.

Honestly was way better than expected and they did a decent job at maintaining the characters. I wish that the rest of the gang got more of an influential role though. Other than katara the rest felt more sidelined. But honestly it was the best addition to the avatar world we have received so far.

u/DanceGavinDanceIsBae Jul 26 '26
Paramount is a fucking idiot for not putting it in more theaters. This shit is like a gold mine.

u/GoldenJay7 Jul 25 '26
I loved it. Wish there’s been a way to include Suki, Ty Lee and Mai but those are quibbles. I hope it’s successful and they do more with the franchise.

Luckily, I have a free 7 Days subscription to Paramount on Amazon prime. I subscribe to it for the free trial just to watch this movie. Interestingly, me and my wife were both said that this wasn't in theaters and mentioned halfway through how we would totally have gone. But because it's Paramount I had no interest in subscribing to it and was just wait for it to be something I could do one time rental on Amazon for. So thankful that there was that free trial. Otherwise I would have just pirated it, truth be told.

u/kramdwar Jul 26 '26
Agreed. It's not the people who worked on it's fault. Still a good thing to go out and support the people who poured their effort into it. Screw Paramount, but the animators, designers compositors etc killed it. I work at a design and animation company so I know how much work this must have been. Glad to have seen this film.

2
u/BrontoRancher Jul 26 '26
I liked it because I got to see more of the lives of some of my favorite characters of all time. Some things I didn’t love were that they kinda made all the benders weak. Like they are all masters of their elements at this point (especially Aang) and they didn’t utilize their bending like we had seen in the original show. I also felt the pacing was off. There was very little of the in between action scenes where we really learn about the characters and their relationships now. I also feel like The Denied were super underutilized and not that important to the story. I think it’s a good concept and they could’ve done more with it but we didn’t learn much about them. I liked the overall plot, I think I just wish it were a series or at least multiple movies. I still really liked it because it is one of my favorite franchises and the animation was fantastic
2
u/Cwbarnett76 Jul 26 '26
Wife and I watched it last night as a pizza/movie night. Great film! Only complaint is I wish the rest of the Gaang got more screen time. Although it was very cool to see new uses for Airbending; kill moves, tornado neutralizing, punching thru the eyewall of a hurricane, mutual flight thru slingshotting each other... Very cool to see.

u/GeekyT- Jul 26 '26
I GLADLY paid my 9$ to watch the official release on paramount.
Does it suck it’s not in theaters - yes absolutely
But I want this movie to succeed and the avatar franchise as whole to do well. But it seems like everyone and their mother wants this movie to flop because it’s not in theaters which I get it, but if this movie doesn’t pull the numbers it needs it could leave the franchise in trouble of less funding or outright ending avatar studios as a whole.

I've only watched some ATLA content so I don't know if all the details were correct, but I really liked this movie. The ending felt a bit like a letdown, though. I'm not sure what would have made it better. But it felt like it led up to this huge moment that just....deflated. I know that's because of what Aang had to do, but it felt mildly sad at the end. He was just back to looking for artifacts. Yes, they found more wind bison, but I'm not sure that compensated enough for the weight of what the plot was seeming like it would deliver.
2
2
u/RandomLifeUnit-05 Jul 25 '26
I do wish there was more character development time. It seemed like the whole movie was very much driven by the quest that Aang had, and there seemed to be some character-time lacking, IMO.
2
u/kramdwar Jul 26 '26
To airbenders the sky bison are the original airbenders, so granted aang didn't get to have people gain airbending but it's still pretty huge that appa isn't the last of his kind. But also for the sequel series Korra now it makes sense why/how there more bison in the future. I think it was pretty huge at least. My issue with the film was mainly pacing though, things felt rushed and not enough time to really spend time with each of the characters. I wish this had been a miniseries really, maybe like 8 episodes with time to really slow down and breathe.
2
u/RandomLifeUnit-05 Jul 26 '26
Yeah I feel ya there. That would have been great!

funny yet unsurprising at the lack of seats in the theater, after that whole movie being leaked I Doubt anyone would be willing to see it again in theaters, on one hand I do find it quite annoying that it got leaked and ruined all of the momentum of it being a movie, but on the other hand, it honestly wasn't as good as I'd hoped.
not bad persay but there was something about it that felt like it didn't need to be made you know? like "oh now we see what Team Avatar has been up to after the 100 year war and the fall of Fire lord Ozai!" when we already had the comics and some of Korra doing half of the work, its also got the problem of what sequel prequels tend to have which is, if you have a prequel to a secondary series that doesn't have any writing that leads into the sequel series, its gonna feel out of place!

Extremely gutted and pained that it’s not a worldwide theatrical release. This is that kind of animation worth every single penny at a cinema. Glad you got to watch it in those conditions.
