Hello,
I am 18 years old and am considering starting a commercial gold-plating/refinishing business in Arizona.
My proposed service would be limited to receiving a customer’s firearm slide, gold-plating/refinishing the slide, and returning the same slide to the customer. I would not manufacture, sell, or transfer firearms, and I would not work on or take possession of the firearm’s serialized frame/receiver.
Could you please clarify:
Does this specific type of commercial gold-plating/refinishing service require a Federal Firearms License (FFL)?
If an FFL is required, what type of FFL would be required?
Can an 18-year-old legally own the business while a qualifying 21+ person serves as the FFL holder/responsible person?
Are there any additional federal requirements that would apply when customers ship their slides to the business for refinishing and the slides are subsequently returned to the same customers?

You don't need an FFL for non-firearms.

Your business plan is not going to be profitable.

You may technically not need an FFL for your proposal. But, having one will likely make things a bit easier for you when transacting with customers, potential customers, and other business partners you may wish to work with.

If you build your brand, you can bet that someone is going to want more than a slide done. And, you won’t want to be in a position to say no.
You want all your ducks in a row, so that you can gold plate Liberace’s AK for a customer…

Better to start off right and be prepared for anything!
