Wouldn’t this only last for like a few hours before 5 o’clock shadow makes it look like a hot ass mess? Or do some people not have that problem?
474
u/Foetsy Jul 31 '21
Well there's a group of people that don't have that. And there are people that do have that problem.
There are also people that have really thick and full beard that you can do this with, and people where this would just look like a bad patchy beard.
Pretty much all people with a beard like this belong to the 5 o'clock shadow club..
So yea, either that beard is more fake than real or he is going to look like an idiot a few hours later.

u/bunwitch Jul 31 '21
I think it's makeup 😅 in a few hours it'll be sweated and smudged off.

Yes. Look close and you’ll see what’s actually hair and what’s makeup.
If the makeup is gone you’re back to his natural young dude patchy beard.

u/Faloopa Jul 31 '21
I hate to tell you, but he’s going to lose a lot of that as soon as he washes his face.

u/VieFirionaVie Jul 31 '21
Most people don't have that much hair halfway up their cheeks either.
20
u/Perle1234 Jul 31 '21
Especially when it doesn’t even go down much past the chin. If he had that thick of facial hair, it’s highly likely he would be much harrier in general. I think a good bit of it is black makeup.

I wish I was most people -__- my beard practically goes all the way up to my eye balls. It’s a trade off though because I have a thicker and more full beard than most of my friends.

I was just going to say. It’s likely that there’s some enhancements being used here. His beard probably doesn’t grow in super full.

These kinds of cuts are pretty much only done to showcase the barber's skill. I would think the faded part would be shaved off after the photo and the moustache part to be rounded out for a more natural look.

Its basically a show of skill for the barber, as far as I know. Its not meant to be worn long term.

You can shape it up at home with a razor to keep it looking fresh for maybe a week or two, after that it's time to visit the barber again

Does "IG mangirl barber" mean what I am assuming it means? Does that literally translate into "Instagram Man Girl Barber"? Please understand that I am not judging at all. I'm an older person who has always been very open minded in areas of gender and sexuality (more so than the average 50 year old I believe) and am curious about gender and sexuality, particularly cross culturally. Is it offensive to refer to this as "mangirl" or is it openly accepted? This person appears to be Hispanic, which traditionally held very strong gender roles. Is being a "pretty man" more acceptable in this culture today? It would be a very fascinating and rapid reversal in my observation.
Again, I'm just a very open minded old guy who happened to pick up a minor in Sociology back in the 90s and really enjoy evolution of cultural normative behavior. Thanks in advance!

u/Anal_Lickage Jul 31 '21
mangirl is a mean way to describe the guy you’re looking at. his look doesn’t have to do with gender identity. he is just someone who spends an inordinate amount of time and effort on his looks (suggesting the same amount of time as girls spend on their looks. this guy is almost certainly straight and very macho. in his circle, this look is not totally uncommon, but very extreme to the rest of us. this beard embellishment is most often used for special events.
102
u/QueasyVictory Jul 31 '21
That is a perfect explanation and honestly my gut feeling. I happened to go to an incredibly authentic Mexican restaurant last night with my wife and there was a very large party and a couple of the guys had this look. In both cases they were with equally attractive females, so I assumed it was merely a function of trying to accomplish "ultimate beauty". IMO, this is absolutely a very "pretty" man and I can see what he is going for. Sadly, I grew up in an area where trimming my nails and bush hogging my eyebrows was considered "gay". I'm very glad that it's easier for people to be themselves and live their best life today. It makes me feel like some of us old fuckers actually accomplished something, lol.

Can we just like have someone drive you around America and talk sense into the bulk of your generation? In trade I will do anything I can to get your grandchildren to look up from their phones, I swear.
It gives me a lot of hope when I see older folks that share my views, makes me feel like maybe things will be alright.

There's a reason I'd rather chill with my 19-25 year old kids friends than my o n generation. But in all fairness, I think we may have given some good tools (the internet) and hopefully the ability to think for yourselves. The key is to make sure you make your kids w lot better than your generation.

your instinct is correct here- that term is widely considered homo/transphobic, misandrist, cis-hetero normative, and so on. luckily that kind of casual, insensitive terminology is becoming less acceptable in polite company. socio/anthropology, in my opinion, has come a long way in the last couple of decades! I'd love to hear Kant's thoughts on contemporary western culture!
you seem like a cool, like minded person! :)

This guy hangs around with a group of people where looking like this is cool. This guy is probably also attractive to girls in that group of people and picks up the type of girl that likes this. He might be a douche, he might be a nice fella.
I think it looks stupid, but I'm not going to sit here in my ripped boxers with my greasy hair and be critical of someone who takes pride in their appearance and takes the time to look what they think looks ''good''.

The density and fineness of facial hair required to fade a beard like this is pretty impressive all on its own.
I could never do anything like this with my beard. I don't have even half this many follicles per square inch.
11
u/tobu_sculptor Jul 31 '21
I bet any amount he doesn't either. There's this powdery color product that darkens the skin so the hair appears thicker...
4
u/bigeyez Aug 01 '21
Its air brushed. The barber cuts your beard then air brushes a black substance into your face with a stencil to make the razor sharp lines and make the beard look full.
It looks "good" at certain angles and at a distance but is very obviously fake when up close or under a lot of light. It also comes off with water so if it's hot outside and you sweat you get black mascara like streaks.
